Offgrid Homesteading In Hawaii

Just another homestead walk-around video showing my pineapples, garden projects, fruit trees, and off grid solar.

Planting a new crop of cacao in the greenhouse for future chocolate. Hopefully, several will germinate.

Checking on the progress of my homestead projects of land clearing, trail blazing, and sweet potato slips seeded through the property for backup food production.

I've been doing a bit of trailblazing to find the center of the property. As I was cutting through the dense jungle, I suddenly broke into a clearing that just happened to be at the center. What good fortune! Now, I'm working to open the site up a bit for future dreams and schemes.

Just having fun messing around with a Chinese Swallowtail caterpillar that I found devouring my young lime tree. Little monster.

Taste testing my first home grown ice cream beans on the homestead. They're sweet and tasty, like sugar filled cotton balls. 🙂

Looks like another pheasant family is encroaching on my "pet" pheasants' turf and sparking a bit of an uproar. A couple males and another female were moving in. The new wild ones were afraid of me and ran back to the forest edge, but the others stayed close to me.

Kalij Pheasants are regularly coming running up to me now to enjoy some scratch with my hens. They make a wide variety of funny noises from cute chortles to fire whistle screeches. This guy makes an angry sound when my ornery hens get too close. In his defense, my hens really are bullies.

Taking a little walk through Thurston Lava Tube, at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It's a short walk but it's a lot of fun.

High atop the volcanic rim, looking out over the desolate lavascape of Kilauea. It's hard to really capture just how vast it is. Since its recent 2018 eruption it has fallen eerily silent after decades of continuous activity. The air is completely free of the noxious vog that has always lingered and menaced the surrounding lands.

The new dwarf apple banana is looking good atop its mound in the middle of the banana patch. Yay!

Finally, the first load of rock has been spread - all 21 tons. Next up, 20 tons of 1 1/2" drain rock to cover the big stuff. Whew!

I finally cut back my patch of ornamental bananas and planted a Dwarf Apple Banana into the top of the heap. Yum! I love apple bananas. 😋

I'm sorry it's so short, but I just wanted to share a glimpse of this lovely little walk in the jungle, near Akaka Falls.

Driving to work, I encountered a donkey on the backroads. Funny old girl.

Well, this happened! I was getting ready to leave for work when a wild kalij pheasant walked up to me. They are generally very nervous and flighty birds, and I've never been close to one until now. How cool is that?! 😁

Onomea Bay is one of my favorite places to visit on the Big Island, Hawaii. It's relatively close to home and is such a beautiful little jungle adventure.
