Wetlands - Mangroves, Marshes and Bogs - Biomes#9
The world's wetlands are aquatic biomes that are among the most complex and biodiverse on our planet. They can occur anywhere on Earth where shallow water exists, from the saltwater mangroves of the tropics, to the bogs and fens of the arctic. Join me as I take a tour of wetlands on every continent and explain the differences in each of their varied types.

💧🌾🌾💧
Mangrove forest occurs only in the tropics, and along coastlines protected from wave action. They are composed of salt tolerant trees and shrubs. Examples are the Sundarbans of India/Bangladesh, the Niger Delta of Nigeria and the Orinoco Delta of Venezuela.
Saltwater marshes are the equivalent of mangroves in temperate latitudes and are populated by salt tolerant trees and shrubs. Examples include the Camargue of France, the Wash of England and the Mississippi Delta.
Tidal Freshwater Marshes and Intertidal Flats occur in areas of large tidal ranges such as river estuaries including the St Lawrence River of Canada and the River Severn of Great Britain.
💧🌾🌾💧
Freshwater Marshes (marshland) are large non-forested flat areas that are flooded seasonally or year round by incoming streams or rivers. Examples include the Everglades of Florida, the Mesopotamian Marshlands of the Tigris and Euphrates confluence in Iraq.
Freshwater Forested Swamps are similar to Freshwater Marshes except their primary vegetation is trees. Examples include the Amazon Basin, the numerous forested swamps of the Eastern Seaboard and Gulf Coast of the USA, and the Pripyat or Pinsk Marshes of Belarus/Ukraine.
Riparian Wetlands are similar to the above freshwater systems except they are dominated by a river that regularly floods its banks. Examples include the Sudd of the Nile River in South Sudan and the Pantanal of Bolivia/Brazil/Paraguay.
💧🌾🌾💧
Bogs and Fens (peat bog and fenland) are areas where the exit of water is heavily or entirely prevented, allowing the build-up of acids in decomposing expired plants (mostly sphagnum moss) that eventually lead to peat. They are found from the tropics to the arctic, and include the Cuvette Centrale of the Congo River and the West Siberian Lowland, probably the largest wetland of any kind in the world. They are also known as peatlands due to their ability to form peat over time.
In areas such as Ireland, peat has been harvested (turf cutting) for centuries for use in home heating. Peatlands are important in terms of carbon capture and the Earth's carbon cycle. CO2 is trapped in the plant while it is alive and upon expiry, the plant keeps most of this carbon as it is converted to peat. If dried out they can ignite, releasing this carbon and contributing to climate change.
Wetlands have faced threats for millenia, but in 1971 the Ramsar Convention was signed to help protect thousands of wetland sites around the world. However many wetlands in the tropics are still under threat.
This information is ideal study material for Environment and Ecology UPSC and AP Environmental Science courses and exams.

City of Fog - The Climate of Lima, Peru
LIMA, PERU. A nation's capital. A sprawling city of 10 million people. This city lies between some of the highest peaks in the world, and the planet's largest ocean. The world's only major city to exist in a desert within the tropics, it is host to one of the world's most peculiar climates. A city of mild temperatures, rolling fogs and almost no rain, this is the world's tropical desert metropolis.

In this video, look at one of the world's rarest sub-climates, the relatively mild desert of the Peruvian coast, and that nation's capital, Lima, lying squarely within this zone. We explore how it is that this city, only 12 degrees from the equator, experiences virtually no rain, on account of the Andes blocking tropical trade winds, and the cold Humboldt ocean current keeping waters much colder than normal for the tropics, and dramatically affecting local weather.
I take an in-depth look as to why so much fog rolls over this city, and yet, despite all this humidity, it almost never rains. The answer is in hydrology and how rain is formed (or not formed in this case, due to, among other things, an inversion layer).
And yet despite the parched conditions, the city has grown into a metropolis, with water piped down from the Andes. More rural communities along the coast, however, have resorted to ingenious means in which to make the desert "rain"...

Brazil: History, Geography, Economy & Culture
Taking up half the continent of South America, Brazil is host to vast array of landscapes and biomes - from the steamy Amazon Rainforests, to the savannah of the Planalto Central, and the lush Atlantic Forests. 🇧🇷
One of the largest countries in the world in terms of land area and population, it is a unique blend of cultures from Europe, Africa and the native land itself. The history of Brazil is one of colonial exploitation and slavery, that, despite the efforts of enlightened leaders such as Dom Pedro II under the Empire of Brazil, today sees corruption and social inequality hold back what would otherwise already be a major global power. 🇧🇷
Despite its colonial past Brazil worked hard to enter the modern age in the 20th Century under presidents such as Getulio Vargas, and a new capital at Brasilia began in 1960s after a massive modernistic building program under the architect Oscar Niemeyer. The economy continued to expand despite political repression under the dictatorship of the 1970s and 1980s, with companies such as Embraer joining an elite club of international aerospace companies developing large aircraft. Brazilian politics has never been quiet and the current president of Jair Bolsonaro continues to divide opinion both at home and abroad. 🇧🇷
A global giant in agriculture, it has become self-sufficient in terms of energy needs, and its manufacturing size is now only second to the USA in the Americas. Rio de Janeiro is one of the most iconic and famous of all world cities, while giant São Paulo beats even New York in size to be the largest city in the Americas. Indeed Brazil's population is truly massive, over 200 million call themselves Brazilian, and live in diverse cities across all of the States of Brazil, from Curitiba in the South, Belo Horizonte in the centre of Minas Gerais, to Salvador Bahia and Recife in the North-East, and lastly, unique Manaus in the heart of the Amazon. 🇧🇷
This is the country that brought Samba, Carnival and Bossa Nova to the world and we look at the development and history of this globally influential rhythms. It is the country with the greatest of all national football teams, with players such as Pele and Neymar household names. 🇧🇷

Iran: History, Geography, Economy & Culture
This is the story of Iran, once known as Persia. In this video, I explore the long history of Iran through to the controversial present, the diverse geography of Iran of deserts and mountains, the surprisingly complex Iranian Economy and the remarkably rich Iranian culture that has influenced the world in so many ways.
A history as old and rich as any, it has endured the battering of invasions and competing influences over millennia, to survive until the present day. This is the country that spawned the world’s first great empire, the Achaemenid Empire, and despite defeat at the hands of the Macedonian Greeks under Alexander, rose again under the Parthian Empire and Sassanid Empire. It was conquered by Muslim Arabs in the 7th Century AD, and over the next 200 years the original population that practiced the home-grown religion of Zoroastrianism was converted to Islam.
During the Golden Age of Islam it became a hotbed of artistic and scientific genius, and the Iranian language, Farsi, was beautiful written down by such poets as Ferdowsi in the epic piece of Persian Poetry, the Shahnameh (Book of Kings). In later centuries, Iran struggled on, maintaining its independence under the Safavids and The Qajar Dynasty, before coming under the influence of Russia and Great Britain in the Great Game of the 19th Century.
The discovery of Iranian Oil marked further influence by Western Powers, who later installed Shah Mohammed Reza ("The Shah"), whose rule turned corrupt and autocratic. He was finally deposed in the 1979 Iranian Revolution by Ayatollah Khomeini and the Islamic Republic of Iran was born. But this further continued troubles for the country, as it became internationally isolated over the Iran Nuclear Program and Iran's promise to destroy the State of Israel.
The geography of Iran comprises mostly mountains and deserts, and yet nonetheless houses a surprisingly large population of 80 million, who are mostly ethnic Persians with Azeris making up the largest minority.
Iranian culture has influenced the world with many words from the Persian language, Farsi, finding their way into English and other European languages. The games of chess and backgammon either emerged from, or were heavily shaped by Persia. And Persian carpets are regarded as the finest in the world, in a tradition that goes back millenia.

Japan: History, Geography, Economy & Culture
This is the story of Japan. In this video, I explore the long and unique history of Japan, the diverse geography of Japan - an archipelago of mountains, forests and volcanoes, the Japanese Economy - perhaps the most sophisticated in the world, and the remarkably rich Japanese culture that has influenced the world in so many ways.

Japan's history as old and rich as any, and is strongly influenced by its geography, an island chain isolated at the end of the Eurasian continent. Its origins begin in the myths of the first Emperor of Japan, with recorded history beginning in the with the Yamato state of the 1st Century AD. Buddhism came to Japan in the 6th Century and fused with the native Shinto religion, which has continued to this day. Various dynasties went forward in the Asuka Period, the Nara Period where the capital of Japan moved to Kyoto, the Heian Period and the Kofun Period where the power of the Shogun, a military commander with greater power than the Emperor began.
But the Shogun's power waned until by the 15th Century, competing warlords ("Daimyo") fought each other in what became known as the Sengoku Period ("Warring States"). Samurai warriors, who ruled their lives by the Bushido Code, fought each other for 150 years. Oda Nobunaga was the one who ultimately triumphed out of the chaos, but he was soon assassinated, and his successor Tokugawa Ieyasu became Shogun after one final contest, the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. The Shogun Tokugawa moved his court to Edo, later renamed Tokyo, and for the next 250 years, peace and isolation reigned in this Edo Period, as foreigners were expelled.
The Edo Period came to an end in 1860 as Admiral Perry of the USA forced Japan to open up. The Shogun was deposed and the emperor restored to power in what became known as the Meiji Restoration. In the next few decades, Japan went from a feudal society to a modern industrialised nation. But this progress was overshadowed by the rise of ultra-nationalist politicians under Hideki Tojo, who invaded China, leading to the Nanking Massacre, and the entry of Japan into World War II. The Empire of Japan was short lived, however, as Great Britain and the USA pushed back its forces, and the atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki saw the unimaginable surrender of the country in August 1945.
Since the war, the Japanese Economic Miracle took place, as Japan went from ruins to the #2 Economy in the world by the early 1970s. It soon dominated electronics, robotics and automotive sectors, with Japanese brands such as Sony, Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Canon and Panasonic becoming household names.
The geography of Japan comprises four main islands Hokkaido in the north, the largest island of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu in the south. Okinawa is also notable, part of the Ryukyu island chain that extends as far as Taiwan. Earthquakes are a continual menace to Japan, with the most recent devastating Tohoku Earthquake of 2011 resulting in a devastating tsunami that led to the loss of 10,000s and the nuclear disaster of Fukushima.
Japanese culture is easily among the world's richest, with its art, ikebana, bonsai and Japanese garden design prized around the world. It has a rich tradition of martial arts, from samurai to judo, karate to sumo. Its cuisine of ramen, sushi, teppan and teriyaki is sophisticated and popular the world over. Manga and anime are the latest globally desired trend of a tradition of centuries of illustration. Japanese strength in both electronics, art and story-telling resulted in its early entry into video games, which it continues to dominate to the present.

The Tundra Biome and Ice Biome - Biomes#8
The Tundra and Ice Biomes of the Arctic and Antarctic. In this video we explore how the weak sun leads to cold temperatures year round and what kind of plants and vegetation, if any, can survive here. Moss and lichen are the most common in the tundra, but upon the ice sheet of Greenland and Antarctica, nothing survives the year-round freeze.
We find the tundra along the coasts of Siberia in Russia, in the north of Alaska, and in northern Canada, which possesses most of the treeless tundra in the world by land area, from the Northwest Territories to Nunavut. The coastal areas of Greenland are also in the tundra biome.
The ice biome is found only in Greenland and Antarctica, which, between them hold most of the world's fresh water. Isolated glaciers in mountainous areas in the Rockies, Andes, Alps and Himalayas make up a tiny fraction of the ice biome, and similarly only small areas of alpine tundra in comparison to the Arctic swathes of treeless wastes.
The correlation between the tundra and ice biomes, and the tundra and icecap climates is very strong, and explains the near identity of names applied to each.

The Taiga Biome (Boreal Forest) - Biomes #7
🌲🌲🌲 The Boreal Forest Biome, often referred by its original Russian name as simply the Taiga. It is a sea of coniferous trees, stretching unbroken from coast to coast in the far north of our world. Only six tree families vie for contention here - four conifers (pine, larch, spruce, fir) and two deciduous species (birch and aspen), making it among the least biodiverse of all biomes.
The taiga dominates Alaska, Canada and Northern Scandinavia. In Russia it dominates Siberia across thousands of miles, and that country contains more of this biome than the other countries combined.

From Zero to 5k - Geodiode's First Two Years
It's been quite a ride! In February 2018 when I decided to have a go at making a YouTube channel about geography, I had no idea how it would pan out. But thanks to you guys, and your incredible support, the channel is now growing at an unprecedent rate, and we have reached 5k subscribers! Woot!
So I thought it was about time I showed my mug. This is really a vlog of me rambling on about the whole story.

Temperate forests are made up of either exclusively broadleaf trees, with most being deciduous, or a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees. They occur primarily in North America, Europe, Eastern Asia and Oceania. Canada, the USA, the UK, France, Germany, Poland, Russia, China, Korea and Japan have the most temperate forests, while broadleaf forests exist in the Southern Hemisphere in Chile, Australia and New Zealand.
A large number of tree species are found here, with many being household names - Oak, Maple, Birch, Beech, Willow, Cherry, Eucalyptus, Cypress, Juniper, Aspen, Cedar, Pine, Araucaria (Monkey Puzzle), Yew, Southern Beech, Elm, Ash, Alder and Poplar being the most common. 🍃
Other notable species include the Sequoia or Redwood Trees of California, the tallest in the world, and the ancient Bristlecone Pine trees, the oldest in the world, also found in California. We look at the beautiful autumn colours of the forests of New England, as well as the cherry blossoms of Japan. And we look at how the oak has dominated so much of North America and Europe, and how pine trees are found throughout the world.🍂
And then there are the hardy Aspen trees of Colorado, that light up the autumn with gold, the red maples of Canada that gave that country its flag, and syrup!🍁
Join me on this amazing tour of this biome, the one with the most famous tree species, and, to many, the most beautiful of all biomes.

The Grassland Biome - Biomes #5
Grass. If there is one plant that has come to dominate our world, it’s this. Occupying every biome on earth except the icesheets, grasses have colonised every patch of soil, from tropical to temperate forests, savannah to steppe, scrubland to desert. Humans have taken these grasses and shaped them over generations into crops that feed the world today. Their homelands are the seas of grass we call Meadow, Prairie, Pampas, Veldt and Steppe - the world’s Grasslands.

10:00 Outro
Prairie is almost exclusively used to refer to the grasslands of North America, and is a word borrowed from the early French settlers to this region, meaning simply “meadow” in that language. Steppe refers mostly to the grasslands of Eurasia, and is taken directly from the Russian word for this biome. Pampas is the most common word for the extensive grasslands of mid-southern South America and is from the Quechua word for plain. Veldt, the Afrikaans word for field, is a loose term to describe the open upland country of eastern South Africa that is sometimes grassland but might also be scrub.
Grasslands can be found in these countries: Canada, USA, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, South Africa, New Zealand, Turkey, Iran, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China.
The domestication of various species of the grass family into cereal crops is regarded as one of the key developments of human civilisation. Wheat, corn, rice, barley, oats, millet, sugar and many more crops that directly, or through fodder for livestock, feed us, are all grasses. And so this humble family of plants that colonised the world and later went onto feed ours can be thought of in many ways as the most important in our world.

This is what the bare earth looks like, the bones of our planet revealed as the skin of vegetation is peeled back. A product of endless sunshine and drought, life yet still finds a way here, for plants to survive in these regions have gotten smart, think cacti and succulents that last through the long droughts by holding vast sums of water in their fleshy bodies, with the Saguaro Cactus of the Sonoran Desert being the biggest of all. 🌵Or there's the strange Welwitschia of the Namib, or the iconic Joshua Tree of California. The oldest of all trees can also be found in the desert mountains of that state - the Bristlecone Pine Tree.
☀️ Deserts occur over extensive parts of the continental surface of the earth, present on every continent, and are in fact the largest biome in terms of land area. They are basically subdivided into four forms, hot and cold, arid and semi-arid. The former determined by whether winter temperatures fall below freezing, the latter determined by whether there is a substantial covering of vegetation or not.
🏜 Specific deserts on our planet are among the world's most famous natural geographic entities. The Mojave Desert and Sonoran Desert of North America. The Atacama Desert of Northern Chile - the driest in the world. The bleak semi-desert of Patagonia in Southern Argentina. The Namib Desert and Kalahari Desert of Namibia. The Sahara Desert of North Africa - the largest in the world. The various deserts of the Middle-East - the Negev, Wadi Rum, the Empty Quarter to name but three. The many deserts of Iran and Pakistan such as the Baluchi. The Thar Desert of Western India. The Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan. The Taklamakan Desert of North-West China - among the most forbidding of all deserts due to its extreme aridity and freezing winter temperatures. The vast cold Gobi Desert of Mongolia. And lastly, the deserts of Australia, such as the Great Sandy Desert and the Simpson Desert, with Uluru, or Ayres Rock, at the heart of that dry continent.
🌃 Despite the aridity, humans have learned to survive here, with large cities existing in the heat and dry. Las Vegas, Phoenix and San Antonio in the USA, Monterrey in Mexico, Lima in Peru, Cairo in Egypt, Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, Baghdad in Iraq, Tehran in Iran, Karachi in Pakistan, Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia.

The Scrub Biome or Shrubland Biome - Biomes #3
Often overlooked, the relatively arid regions of earth that are the Shrublands (also known as Scrub or Scrubland) take second or third place to forests or grasslands when it comes to beauty contests.
☀️☀️☀️🌳🌺🌸🌼
Too dry for trees to flourish, we’re left with a mix of shrubs and grasses, spanning the subtropics to the temperate latitudes. Having a surprising biodiversity considering their parched appearance, this biome is known by an equally diverse set of names, from scrub or scrubland, to bush, brush, matorral, garrigue, maquis, machhia, fynbos, mallee and chaparral and more. A place of heat and drought, yet still abundant life, these are the shrublands of our planet.
From the Mediterranean, to southern California, central Chile, the Cape of South Africa and Australia, the Mediterranean scrub biome dominates. While in the subtropics, from Texas and Mexico to the Caatinga of NE Brazil, the Gran Chaco of Paraguay, the Sahel of Africa, these are transitions between the Savannah and deserts.

The Savannah Biome - Biomes #2
The Savannah (Savanna) is the vast open country of the tropics composed of a patchwork of trees and shrubs on a bed of grass. It is a result of the tropical wet and dry seasons that cycle through the tropics year after year - the Tropical Savannah Climate.
In this video on biogeography we take a close look at the Savannah Biome. What is the Savannah? What makes it that way? And what countries have the Savannah?
The Savannah Biome dominates the continent of Africa at the centre of our world but is also found in Brazil, Australia, India and the Caribbean. 🌎🌍🌏
Of all the world’s habitats, this one supports the earth’s most famous fauna and wildlife. This is the home of the safari of the Masai Mara of Kenya, the Serengeti of Tanzania and the Kruger National Park of South Africa. 🐗🦘🦒🐘🦛🦏🦓🐆

Tropical Rainforest and Tropical Seasonal Forest - Biomes#1
The greatest biodiversity of any area of earth with over half of all plant and animal species. Known commonly as jungle, selva or rainforest, these regions are in fact two distinct biomes – the evergreen rainforest and seasonal forest (dry forest) of the tropics. 🌳🌴🌱
In this biogeography video I'll look at the tropical forests that are basically found in two types - the classic rainforest that has hardwood evergreen trees, and the dry forest or seasonal forest that sheds its leaves in the dry season. We also look at the various rainforest plants that come in three main groups depending on the continent. 🌺🌸

Tropical forest, also known as equatorial forest is found all around the equatorial regions, including:
- Central America and the Caribbean (Costa Rica, Panama, Dominican Republic, Colombia)
- The Amazon Basin of South America (Ecuador Amazon, Ecuador Jungle, Brazil Forest, Peru Rainforest)
- West Africa and the Congo Basin (Congo Rainforest)
- The Indian Subcontinent (India Forest)
- South East Asia and the southern coast of China (Thailand Forest, South China Forest, Taiwan Forest)
- The archipelagos of The Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia (Philippines Forest, Malaysia Rainforest, Singapore Rainforest)
- The north-west coasts of Australia, and most Pacific islands including Fiji and Hawaii (Hawaii Forest)
The tropical forests are under greater threat of deforestation than at any time, as they are cut down to make way for agriculture.

Biomes - The Living Landscapes of Earth : Introduction To Biomes Of The World : Geodiode
When you look at pictures of the Earth from space, what’s the first thing that you see? A blue marble, as some have described it. A water world where oceans and swirls of white clouds dominate. But most of us will then have our attention drawn to the shapes imprinted on its surface – the continents. And they come in many colors. The white of Antarctica, the beige of the Sahara, the light green of grasslands, and the darker shades of our planet’s forests in their many forms.
So many of these colors that give the world its look are the result of trillions of individual plants growing upon the surface. Which plants grow where is determined by many factors, with the climate being the most dominant factor. Desert and scrubland, savannah, prairie and steppe, tundra and taiga, woodland and rainforest. They are at the base of almost every food chain of every animal – the habitats that sustain all other lifeforms, and ourselves. Collectively, they are known as biomes - the living landscapes of Earth.

Human Habitability - Climate Zone Population Density
Have you ever wondered which parts of the Earth support the greatest concentrations of population? And if so, what would be the leading cause of this?
Human settlement is determined by many factors, such as proximity of trade routes (rivers and coasts), defence and imposed governmental policy. But perhaps the greatest influence is that of climate, and through it, the ability of the land to support population through agriculture.
📊🌎🌍🌏📐
In this video we combine the results of the analysis of climate types by total population and land area to produce perhaps the most telling of all metrics relating to climate and habitability - the index of population density. The ultimate statistical geographic analysis of climate and population.

What are the Biggest and Smallest Climate Zones?
If you love climate science then you've probably wondered how big the Koppen climate zones are relative to each other.
🌎🌍🌏
Well, look no further, because after an extensive original survey of the globe, in a detailed study of geographic statistics, we have compiled such a list, comparing each climate zone in size globally, as well as which countries have the biggest proportions in each zone.
For instance, it would not surprise you that Russia has the largest fraction of Subarctic 🌲 climates in the world. But which country has the most Hot Desert? 🏝

Climate Zone Populations
There are many reasons why people live in the places that they do. On the coast, or along rivers, for trade. Security in the hills, away from invaders. Occasionally, rulers arbitrarily create new capitals in the centre of their realms.
But the main determinant for human settlement is the availability of clean, fresh water. Because without it, crops cannot grow, livestock cannot be raised. Without those, there is no food. Without food, there is no population.
📊🌎🌍🌏📐
So climate and population are inextricably linked. And if you know a bit about climate classification, then you’ve probably wondered which climate types have the least and most populations.
After extensive original research and tabulation this data is presented in this video, where I reveal each climate zone, from the least to most populous, and additionally reveal which countries contribute to which populations in each climate zone.

The Asian Monsoon - The World's Largest Weather System
The Asian Monsoon - the world’s largest weather system. Affecting almost half of the world’s population, from the blistering heat of India, to the frigid north of Siberia. In this video we look at the dynamics that great the great change in winds every season, and show real places in Asia which are affected by this.

Dry winters and wet summers define the Asian Monsoon, from India, Nepal and Bangladesh, through Vietnam, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan to Korea, Japan, Mongolia and Siberian Russia in the north. This is the only part of the world where such wet and dry seasons exist outside the tropics.
The dynamics that drive the Indian Monsoon and the East Asian Monsoon is the seasonal movement of the ITCZ (Intertropical Convergence Zone) back and forth. In India, the summertime produces the Southwest Monsoon blows in from the Indian Ocean bringing heavy rain, while in winter, the Northeast Monsoon prevails, bringing dry cool winds from the Himalayas.
The Indian Monsoon produces the wettest places on earth with Mawsynram and Cherrapunji in Meghalaya State, India, both experiencing more than 12 meters of rain per year.
The East Asian Monsoon produces the snowiest places on earth, along the NW coast of Japan when Siberian winds blow across the Sea of Japan in winter, collecting frigid moisture that is then dumped on cities like Sapporo in Hokkaido.
The Asian Monsoon has a dramatic effect on the climate of India, the climate of Japan, the climate of Korea and the climate of China. The Climate of Northern Australia is also affected, being opposite to the continent of Asia in regard to the Asian Monsoon.
This in-depth study of the Asian Monsoon is essential preparation for the IAS Exam and UPSC Exams of the Indian Civil Service.

The Pacific Northwest Climate - Oceanic or Mediterranean?
The Pacific Northwest of the United States and Canada. A wonderland of nature. Epic scenery – breath-taking mountains, endless forests, windswept beaches, even volcanoes. And the amazing cities of Vancouver, Seattle, Portland and Victoria that have influenced the wider world far beyond their isolated patch along the wild Pacific coast.

And… it is somewhat well known for its weather too. Dominated by wet winter westerlies blowing in from the Pacific each year, its exposed coasts feature some of the highest rainfall in the world, and sport temperate rainforests. Individual areas within the Pacific Northwest vary in terms of rainfall. British Columbia is cooler and wetter than Washington State, and in turn with Oregon.
In the first of my Climate Casebook series, I look at the curious case of the Pacific NW Climate. Is it Oceanic like Britain? Or is it more like a Mediterranean climate with its dry summers?
🌧🌧☁️⛅️☀️☀️☀️⛅️☁️🌧🌧
The Pacific Northwest climate is actually a hybrid of the classic Mediterranean hot dry summers / wet winters pattern, and the Oceanic mild summers and rain all year round. It has very similar winter and summer temperatures to England, but it has the wet winter and dry summer patterns of California. Oceanic temperatures meets Mediterranean rainfall patterns.
