The Koppen-Geiger Climate Classification System
In this reference work, I cover the basics on every climate zone within the world's most established climate classification system, the Koppen-Geiger. Evolved over 150 years by Wladimir Koppen and refined by Rudolf Geiger, this system is composed of five basic regions:
A - Tropical (Hot Year Round with Rain Year round or part year)
B - Dry (Low rainfall year round in Subtropical and Continental areas)
C - Temperate (Moderate temperatures with mixed rainfall patterns in the mid-latiitudes)
D - Continental (More extreme temperature ranges in continental interiors in the mid to high latitudes)
E - Polar (Very cold regions in the poles of our planet)

Journey Across The Earth and Its Climate Zones and Biomes
The biodiversity of the Tropical Rainforests. The endless rhythm of wet and dry seasons in the Tropical Monsoon and Savannah. The lofty temperate paradise of the Subtropical Highlands. The scorching drought of the Hot Deserts. The great cities of the Humid Subtropical. The idyllic coastlines of the Mediterranean. The beautiful countryside of the Oceanic. The remote and empty Cool Deserts. The great plains and cities of the Continental. The vast forests and extreme temperatures of the Sub-Arctic. The barren wastes of the Tundra... and the Icecap - as if it was in a different world entirely...
It's hard to believe that just one small rocky planet can host such a diversity of landscapes. Hard to believe again that it's the only planet we know of that can support life, including over 7 billion humans.
Presented to you in over 90 minutes of HD video of real places in each climate zone, to the soundtrack of the music from the landmark series "Secrets of World Climate", Themes shows you the beauty of our planet and its cities.

The Icecap Climate - Secrets of World Climate #12
The coldest places on earth, where 99% of the Earth's freshwater lies, locked up in ice sheets kilometers deep. A land of ice, snow, glaciers, freezing winds, and bitter cold.

The twelfth and final episode in a unique series exploring all the major climate zones of the world focuses in full high-definition video on real places in each climate zone. In this geography documentary, we show this part of the world in its full beauty, and uncover the secrets of why it is that way and show you the lands and settlements that lie within.
The distinguishing feature of the icecap climate is that temperatures remain below freezing all year round. This means no vegetation at all. It would be a totally lifeless place was it not for various species of penguins toughing it out in the most hostile climate on earth, free from any predators.
Winters here are extremely cold and lie in total darkness for months at a time. The coldest recorded temperatures on earth lie in the high icecap of East Antarctica, with temperatures below 90°C on record.
There are no human settlements here, beyond the various research stations populated by scientists from various countries, with the largest being McMurdo Station, and other notables, the Scott-Amundsen South Pole Station, and the Russian Vostok station.

The Tundra Climate - Secrets of World Climate #11
The treeless Arctic. A desolate region, where few things grow. This is the northern tip of our planet… this is the tundra. In this video we look at the Tundra Climate of cool summers and how it influences the vegetation that can grow here. ❄️🌬🌨
🕐CHAPTERS🕖

👉2:02 Tundra Climate Definition
👉3:15 Comparison to Subarctic Climate
👉4:13 Tundra Climate Locations
👉5:20 Tundra Vegetation and Landscapes
👉6:07 Human habitation in the Tundra
👉6:34 Outro
The distinguishing feature of the tundra climate is low summer temperatures leading to an absence of tree growth. Winters can be very cold, but also relatively mild, depending upon proximity to the ocean. Permafrost - permanently frozen ground below the surface - exists throughout these regions all year round.
❄️🌬🌨
Arctic tundra is found all along the coasts of the Arctic Ocean, including the northern coasts of Alaska and Siberia in Russia. The largest tundra region, though is in Canada where it makes up much of the Northwest Territories, and most of Nunavut. All the coasts of Greenland are made up of the tundra and its climate also.
Alpine tundra occurs in upland areas of Iceland and Norway, along with high mountain areas in the Alps of Europe, the Himalayas of Asia, the Rockies of North America, and the Andes in South America, but such tundra has no permafrost. The same applies to Antarctic tundra, which occurs in small areas around the southern tip of South America, and the northern part of the Antarctic peninsula, where moderating winds from the Southern Ocean keep winter temperatures mild.
❄️🌬🌨
Due to the hostility of the climate and the difficulties of building on top of the permafrost, few large settlements occur here, with Nuuk, the capital of Greenland being the largest, with a population of only 18,000

This region has the Climate of Alaska and the Climate of Siberia that you can imagine - long dark cold winters but mild short summers. The distinguishing feature of the subarctic climates is a very wide range of temperature between a warm summer and very cold winter.
Found all across the top of the two northern continents of North America and Eurasia, these climates encompass most of the northern halves of Russia and Canada, along with Alaska and most of Scandinavia.
This is the climate of that most forbidding of global names, Siberia, and is home to the coldest cities on earth - Anchorage, Murmansk, Norilsk and Yakutsk to name a few. It is also home to Verkhoyansk, the place with the most extreme temperature range anywhere on earth.

☀️⛈❄️
Lastly, the north of eastern Asia is dominated by the monsoon variant of the continental climate, with northern China, Korea and Eastern Russia experiencing hot and wet summers, then cold and dry winters. The northern half of Japan and the entire island of Hokkaido experience the year round precipitation of the continental climate with particularly snowy winters.

The eighth episode in a unique series exploring all the major climate zones of the world that focuses in full high-definition video on real places in each climate zone. In this geography documentary we show this part of the world in its full beauty, and uncover the secrets of why it is that way and show you the influential lands and cities that lie within.
Found on every continent, this climate is home to the famous Atacama and Gobi deserts, as well as the iconic lands of the Western United States that gave birth to the Western fiction genre.
☀️❄️💨
In North America, most of the inland western half of the USA is classed as a cool desert, including the states of Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington and Oregon. Within this area are the natural gems of the Grand Canyon and Arches and Zion National Parks.
In South America, the famous Atacama desert lies in the north of Chile and Western Bolivia, the driest place on earth, while further south, the endless parched plains of Patagonia in Argentina reach down almost to the Antarctic. Cool arid or semi arid conditions also occur in parts of South Africa, Australia and Spain.
☀️❄️💨
Most of the world's cool deserts, however, lie within Southwest Asia and Central Asia - from Iran and Afghanistan in the south, and up through the Central Asian Republics of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan where we find the extensive Karakum desert and the now mostly dried out Aral Sea. The Taklamakan desert of Western China is the second largest expanse of sand dunes in the world, while the most famous cool desert of all - the Gobi of Mongolia that gave birth to the world's largest land empire of Genghis Khan - completes our map of cool Asian deserts.

Covering every inhabited continent on Earth except Asia, this climate's home is of course the Mediterranean Sea itself, spanning Portugal and Morocco in the far west, and covering most of Spain, the Algerian and Tunisian coasts, the Balearic Islands, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and Malta, the Cote d'Azur of France, most of Italy (the Cinque Terre, the Amalfi coast, Tuscany and Campania), and then across the Adriatic Sea to the coasts of Croatia, Montenegro and Albania, and down into the mainland of Greece and the Greek islands. Continuing east, much of Turkey is blessed by this climate, and we finish at the far shore of this sea with Syria, Lebanon and Israel. Famous cities within this area include Lisbon, Madrid, Barcelona, Casablanca, Nice, Monaco, Florence, Rome, Athens, Istanbul, Damascus, Beirut, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
🌧☀️☀️☀️☀️🌧
In North America, the entire west coast of the United States has this climate, from the cooler variant in Washington State and Oregon, down into California all the way to the Mexico border. Principal cities here that receive dry summers and wet winters are Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles and San Diego.
Central Chile has this climate, including its capital Santiago and principal port Valparaiso, as does the extreme south-west of South Africa including the city of Cape Town.
🌧☀️☀️☀️☀️🌧
Lastly, the island continent of Australia has regions touched by this climate, these being the south west of Western Australia and the regional capital of Perth, and parts of South Australia including the state capital of Adelaide.
The Mediterranean climate is the birthplace of legendary civilisations including Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Carthage, and the Hebrew nation of Israel, as well as the spiritual home of the Catholic Church in Rome, and the old centre of Byzantium and the Ottoman Empire in Istanbul (Constantinople).

The fifth episode in a series exploring all the major climate zones of the world, here we show this part of the world in its full beauty, and uncover the secrets of why it is that way and show you the cities that lie within its influence.
Covering every inhabited continent on Earth, the Humid Subtropical covers a full quarter of the United States, that being the south-east quadrant, including major cities such as Houston, New Orleans, Atlanta, Orlando, Washington D.C. and New York City. Much of Mexico, in the uplands on either side of the central mountains is under the monsoon variant of this climate, including its second largest city of Guadalajara.
☀️⛅️🌧⛈
Much of the eastern central part of South America is covered by this climate, including southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and northern Argentina, and major cities such as Sao Paulo, Montevideo and Buenos Aires.
Northern Italy, specifically the Po Valley, and the cities of Turin, Milan and Venice, parts of the Balkans and the Serbian Sava plain, and coasts of the Black Sea also experience this climate. Parts of southern Africa also come under this climate zone, including the province of Kwazulu-Natal in South Africa and the cities of Durban and Port Elizabeth.
☀️⛅️🌧⛈
In Asia, the Humid Subtropical climate dominates the whole of Northern India, including the capital Delhi, the massively populated Ganges River system, and most of densely populated regions of China, including the cities of Chengdu, Guangzhou (Canton), Shenzhen, Macau, Hong Kong, Nanjing and Shanghai. Taiwan is also wholly covered by this climate. Most of the population of Japan is under this climate also, with all of the southern and eastern main islands featuring the four distinct seasons that define the Humid Subtropical.
☀️⛅️🌧⛈
Lastly, the island continent of Australia, specifically the eastern coast from Queensland down to New South Wales, and those state capitals of Brisbane and Sydney, features this climate.
The Humid Subtropical climate has given rise to the two oldest civilisations on the planet, those of China and India. The part this climate has paid in this development is due to its plentiful rain and moderate seasonal temperatures, allowing massive cultivation and tolerable living conditions for humans.

The Hot Desert Climate - Secrets of World Climate #4
THE HOTTEST PLACES on our earth. ☀️🔥The deserts of the subtropical regions. In this video we show these parts of the world and why they are that way.🏜
From the Mojave, Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts of south-west United States and northern Mexico, through the arid coast of Peru, and the Gran Chaco of north-west Argentina, the Americas feature unique biomes of aridity and heat.
The largest of all deserts, the Sahara, spanning the vast northern stretches of Africa, and continuing east into the Horn of Africa and the Middle East and beyond into southern Iran, Pakistan and western India - the central continents of Earth have the greatest areas of hot and dry lands anywhere on the planet.
In southern Africa, the Namib and Kalahari deserts offer a counterpoint to their much greater northern brother.
Lastly, the majority of the "island continent" is covered by the endless plains of the Red Heart of Australia, and the Outback - the Great Sandy, Victoria and Gibson deserts.

The unique and temperate subtropical highland climates are explained as high-altitude versions of their much hotter tropical rainforest and tropical monsoon/savannah brothers. As one rises in altitude, the air cools, taking the searing heat of the tropics down to pleasant temperatures reminiscent of Europe or North America.
These are the lands of the once great empires of the Aztecs and Inca of the Americas, and today host huge safari wildlands in Africa, and magnificent terraced farming in Asia.
Countries featured in this climate zone:
Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Ethopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, China.
