From the Roots Up Homestead

With rifle hunting season just around the corner in Oklahoma, my daughter wanted to go get some practice in before the big day. I chose pumpkins as targets for a few reasons. First, they're roughly the size of the vital zone we want to be able to hit. Second, they're more reactive than punching holes in paper. It's fun to see chips and chunks go flying off of your target to let you know you hit your mark. Third, the pumpkin scraps are a great snack for the deer, so when we were done we put what we could out by the feeder. Fourth and final, I knew it would be easy to cut the top off and drop a container of Tannerite (exploding target) down into the pumpkin without telling her, so I could get her reaction and have fun watching a pumpkin explode. Ultimately this is about spending time with my daughter, and practicing firearm safety, handling, and marksmanship. We had a great day, and she is clearly ready to step out into the woods with me in a couple of weeks. The Tannerite was just icing on the cake for a little extra fun. It's day 24 of the #EveryBitCountsChallenge and today we want to make use of celery before it just turns soggy in the refrigerator! Sometimes it's hard to use up all your celery before it goes bad, and freezing just simply does not work! Never fear! Kristy will show you a great way to extend the shelf life and give you a healthier option for something you probably keep on hand anyway. The celery salt you buy from the store has preservatives in it, which might extend the shelf life, but it detracts from the all natural health benefits of this great seasoning from day 1! If you make your own in small batches you have a better option that will give you three or four months of shelf life and all you need is a way to dry, a way to crush, and a way to mix! It's day 18 of the Every Bit Counts Challenge, and today Lance is doing a simple recipe for okra! Once those okra plants start producing in the summer, it's easy to get overrun! What do you do with all that okra!? Well, simply slice some up and put it in the dehydrator. You can even add some seasoning to flavor it, and voila! a quick, easy, healthy snack. Better yet, use it as a topping, for example replacing croutons on top of your salads.
