On this episode or our Florida Adventure Trail (F.A.T.) series we enter Hell, Tate's Hell State Forest, that is. From there we are making our way to Apalachicola National Forest to find a good place to camp. The trails vaired from groomed gravel to sand to lightly traveled overgrown with down trees. It made for a long day, and we were really ready to get to camp by the end of the day. We even had to break out our chainsaws on one track. The rigs got dirty in some wicked water and mud, too. All in all, just another awesome day on the FAT! Thanks for continuing to watch. The Florida Adventure Trail (F.A.T.) does not disappoint. We continue our travels and this time, we are on the trails near the coast. We spend most of this day in the Big Bend Wildlife Management Area. There is such a cool variety of trails, landscape, and animal life. This is a super cool area of Florida that we had never been to. The trail has many pull over opportunities to take a break, and stop for a bit. We pulled over our rigs and did a nice little hike with the dogs around a no name lake, which was super cool and would be awesome to camp around. There was even a huge bat house! On the coastal road, we climbed an awesome observation tower which provided a 360 degree view of the salt marshes. What an epic ride! Another awesome day overlanding and off-roading the trails of the Florida Adventure Trail (F.A.T.). We started this dat from Cliff Lake Camp, which is right off the FAT trail. This campground is a wide open field that surrounds a lake located in Apalachicola National Forest. No reservation was needed. There are trees for cover in some spots, but the setting is awesome. There was a port-a-potty here, but I am not sure if it is always there, or there just because it is hunting season. We enjoyed our morning getting packed up, and after a good cup of coffee and a healthy breakfast we set off on the trails. We call this episode a "Sidetracked" episode, because it was about exploring. There was so much to do, and not enough time to do it, so we felt that we could take this day to explore. We will have many more trips to finish out the FAT. We had a pretty bad storm overnight, so the tails were wet, and there was plenty of water to drive though. What an amazing campground. We ended out first day on the Florida Adventure Trail (F.A.T.) by staying just off the trail at Shired Island Campground. It was an amazing place to chill out, site by the fire, and enjoy the sunset! http://floridanaturecoast.org/County/Dixie/ShiredIslandPark/ShiredIslandPark.aspx Located within the boundaries of the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge, Shired Island Park comprises just over 3 acres owned and operated by Dixie County. The Shired Island Campground offers 12 hookup spots for RV'ers, with or without electricity. Tent campers are also welcome. All camping spots are first-come first-served. No reservations are accepted. Each evening an employee of the parks department comes by to collect the camping fee. We stayed here in December during a cold spell, and it couldn't have been a better time. The campground is right on the beach along the salt marshes. This being the case, it can be prone to no see-ums and mosquitos. During our stay, they were not to be found! We also lucked out by having a clear day. This allowed us to see a most amazing sunset. The colors were awesome and the sound of the waves were the cherry on top! Once the sun went down, the stars came out in full force and were quite the show. The campsites were great for the two Colorado AEV Bisons to set up camp. @OverWaterOverLand with their roof top tent, and us with our ground tent. Our new Series will be covering an overland adventure route right here in Florida! Jon Birkmire, the creator and artist behind the Florida Adventure Trail project (@SunshineStateAdventureCo ) has made public, for purchase, a documented adventure trail in Florida. This trail loops from the Jacksonville area south into Central Florida and then back up through the Panhandle. This trail connects State Forests, with National Forests, and Wildlife Management Areas to give a truly fun experience on pavement, gravel, and dirt. This trail can be done as one huge expedition or broken up into pieces. We have taken the approach to do a little at a time. The first video in this series will be about our travel into Goethe State Forest and the fun we had there. We will then make our way to Shired Island Campground for a night of relaxation before we head out farther into the Panhandle on our overland journey. I am joined by @OverWaterOverLand on this trip. We have upgraded the suspension on our 2021 Chevy Colorado ZR2 AEV Bison. With all of the overland and camping equipment plush the Decked Drawer System and ARE Bed Topper, the truck has a bunch of extra weight. That being the case, we have noticed that the rear was sagging a little, or at least the truck was squatted. We took some measurements and the rear was about 1 ¼ inches lower that the front when measure from the ground, up through the center of the wheels, to the bottom of the fender flairs. I ordered the following kit from OK4WD (https://ok4wd.com/) OK4WD OVERLAND SUSPENSION UPGRADE FOR 2017+ CHEVROLET COLORADO ZR2 ROK17ZR2OSU The kit comes with two expedition leaf springs, two packs of bushings, new u-bolts (did not use, video tells why), and a bolt for the driver’s side leaf sprint front brocket (you will see why). The job was not super difficult. This vehicle is a truck of firsts, because this is the first time I had ever changed out leaf springs. I did the job in my driveway, and I only had to go to the store once for extra tools 😊 Overall, I am very happy with the outcome. I have gotten a little over 2” of list with the new springs. I am sure they will drop a little after they break in, but now when I load up the truck for camping, I should be level instead of having that squat! I hop I show enough in the video.
