The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) is known for one major change that caused some controversy among American denominations: it replaced gender specific words like “brother” and “mankind” with “brother and sister” and “people.” This translation is known for the effort to be “gender-inclusive.” How does this decision affect the quality of the translation? Is this translation biased? Maybe not in the way you think…

The New King James Version (NKJV) follows the tradition of the King James Version while trying to update the language to a more modern English. Granted it may not feel like our modern English of 2023. What makes this translation stand out is its balance between a formal and dynamic translation, often dubbed by scholars as an optimum translation. This balance also makes this translation a great Bible to study from.

The King James Version is in the top 5 best sellers of Bible translations today. This version was authorized by King James I in the 17th Century so that the common man could read scripture. Although the language may seem odd to us, it was written in the English of the time. This lesson will cover how the King James Version was put together and how you can use it to support your Bible studies. This lesson is part of our course on “Why do we have different Bible translations?” This course covers 20 different Bible translations, how we got them, how they were developed, and what their utility is, so you can be better equipped in your Bible studies.

The Garden of Gethsemane lies outside of the old city towards the lower side of the Mount of Olives. The modern garden you can visit today is much smaller than it was in the first century but the olive industry is still alive and well. There are a few trees in this garden that might have been saplings at the time of Jesus 2,000 years ago! Join us as Michael explains the historical and spiritual significance of the garden.

Acts 2:41 tells us that three thousand people were baptized following Peter’s sermon at the Temple Mount. That’s a lot of people! The traditional theory is that these new believers travelled a ways from the Temple Mount to get baptized in the river. However, archaeology reveals to us some very interesting facilities located on the south side of the Temple Mount that would have accommodated such a number of baptisms.

“Apart from me you can do nothing” is easily in Jesus’ top 10 most controversial statements. In this case He is talking about the fruit (what we produce) from the branches (us) grafted into the vine (Jesus). In gardening pruning is the process of thinning out the plant so that it can produce more fruit. This means removing branches or growths, and sometimes a lot. This lessons continues our study of John 15:1-11 with practical applications on the spiritual process of pruning.

Dr. Eliat Mazar is a renowned archaeologist whose discoveries helped uncover the biblical record under Jerusalem. One of those discoveries was a bulla, also known as a clay seal that would have been used to seal letters. Hundreds of bullas have been found and they typically carry the symbol and name of the writer (such as a king, official, or scribe). This particular bulla was found on the south side of the Temple Mount and provides evidence of one of the most famous old testament prophets.

What makes a carpenter over a hobbyist? What makes an athlete over a weekend warrior? What makes an expert over a fraud? Buying the right clothes, practicing the proper language, and participating in certain activities can give us the illusion that we are more qualified and producing more than we actually are. So what makes a Christian over just acting like a Christian? John 15:1-11 clearly states that as followers of Christ there is only one source we can plug into to bear fruit: God. This lesson provides practical applications for how you can be certain you are grafted in God’s vine and how to stay grafted in the vine.

John 15:1-11 is a popular section of scripture about Jesus telling his disciples to “Abide in Me.” It is the last lesson He gives his disciples before going to the cross. “Abide” is the verb of interest in this lesson. If we don’t understand what this word means, it will be difficult to follow Jesus’ instructions.

Isaiah 2:10 and Nehemiah 3:8 both make references to Jerusalem’s “Broad Wall.” It turns out you can find sections of this wall exposed in the old city of Jerusalem. Join us as we look at archaeological evidence the remains provide and how they compare to scripture.

A common phrase you might hear in Christian circles is “God’s timing is not our timing.” It’s not a direct quote from scripture, but there might be reason to consider it. In this special theatrical presentation, we meet the lame man from Acts 3 & 4. Every day he sits at the Beautiful Gate begging for coins until he is healed by Peter and John. What we often miss is that this man is nearly 40 years old! This means he likely saw Jesus come to the Temple during His ministry. Have you ever thought about why Jesus never healed him himself?
Thank you to God’s Gathering Place in Conover, WI, for letting us film.

BASICS OF APOLOGETICS: Why are there 4 Gospels? (Session 9/10)
Watch the entire series here: https://evidence4faith.org/portfolio/christianbasics/
The differences found in the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) are often used to discredit the life of Jesus and as a reason to not trust scripture. This perspective often comes from a fundamental understanding of what these books are. As the books talk about the life of Jesus we are tempted to think of them as biographies. But compare any of the books to a modern biography and you will find the Gospels to be lacking quite a bit to fit the biography category. Are the differences between the Gospels and the events they emphasize intentional? Prophecies from the Old Testament shed light on this problem and provide a better framework to read the four Gospels as they were intended.

BASICS OF APOLOGETICS: How we got the Bible (session 8)
Watch the entire series here: https://evidence4faith.org/portfolio/christianbasics/
How did we get our modern Bibles? This is likely a common question you have heard and wondered about. A common misconception is that our Bibles are a very recent creation. Not all of the books in the Bible were written at the same time and not all writings were considered God-inspired. This lesson traces back the history of our Bible to the very first writings all the way up to our modern printed Bibles. You will learn how our current canon got put together and why you can trust the accuracy of modern translations.
