SHOULD YOU UPGRADE OR UPDATE?
There are definitely some good reasons to update or upgrade your Linux Desktop. I'm going to list some of them here:
1. Security Updates are probably the first and most important reason you'd want to update your system. You don't want any kind of vulnerability to expose your system or data to individuals with nefarious intentions. This one is kind of a no-brainer.
2. Maintenance releases for system and software are a very close second to Security Updates. Every once in a while a developer will discover, either on their own or through their users, that they made a mistake. Once those mistakes are fixed, the developers will release their Maintenance updates, and you should be good to go. If the problem is affecting you, then you might want to give the fix a go. If you're not having any problems, then you might want to hold off for a week or so to see what the fallout is from the latest patch. Though there's probably nothing wrong with the patch, you never know. Think about Microsoft's patches when approaching this one. Even if you're not experiencing a problem now, you might in the future. If there's nothing wrong with the update, then give it a try. If it fixes your problem, or it doesn't promote a new one, you're most likely safe.
3. Introduction of new features, hardware inclusion, or improvements are also worth trying IF you're either in need of the new features, inclusion or improvements. That pesky graphics card you just installed might not have been included in the previous kernel, but it might be in there, now. If things get worse, you can always roll your kernel back and wait for the next version to come down the line. When it comes to software, you decide if the updates are things you want or need. If they are, go for it! If not? Well, maybe you don't need it right now. By the time you do, the software might have been updated again and you'll get even more out of it.
4. Tighter coding for your OS, desktop or applications is another good reason to update or upgrade. If it helps your workflow, then it's worth the upgrade. Yes, you might have to learn new muscle memory to achieve the final results, but that's usually a small price to pay. If it's radically different from your way of working, try it out in a virtual machine first and see if you can't wrap your mind around it. Sometimes newer is not better. It's your choice and your call.
5. It looks pretty! Um, well, if prettier means you're getting more done or done in a better way, yeah. Okay. If not, well that's a totally subjective call and one you're going to have to make.
There may be other reasons to upgrade or update, but those are the ones that popped into my head today. My advice is to research what the upgrade or update is before you leap in and find things are as good as you thought they'd be.

CLEAN UP THAT EFI
Are you a Distro Hopper? Have you noticed that you have old Distro's listed in your UEFI when you boot into BIOS? I have a fix for that. I did forget to "say" one thing in the video that you'll need to do after deleting an old Distro Folder in the /boot/efi/EFI folder: Open your Terminal and enter "sudo update-grub" (without quotes!), enter your password, and let 'er rip! Other than that...
I also talk about Shotcut's ability and speed if you use the "Hardware Encoding" function and you have a GPU (non-integrated graphics card). It's a thing of beauty!
Want some links? Well, here ya go!
What the heck am I talking about regarding the UEFI Boot Lisings? This site will show you, and will also give you a quick tutorial on how to fix the UEFI listings: https://www.reddit.com/r/DistroHopping/comments/jk2dx7/how_do_i_remove_uefi_boot_options/
Want more granular control of your UEFI? LinuxConfig shows you how: https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-manage-efi-boot-manager-entries-on-linux
How the heck did I get Nautilus to give me Administrator Rights to a folder or file? You'll need to install a nifty little tool called, "Nautilus-Admin". It's Foss shows you how: https://itsfoss.com/open-nautilus-as-administrator/

A GNOME-Y SHOW
Gnome's Developers been getting a (possibly deservedly) bad rap for taking key features away from the user. Here are a couple of tweaks to show you what you can do to get some of those functions back. Also, we'll take a look at the upcoming version of Gnome 43. Looks like some very cool stuff coming down the pike!
Want to get a type-ahead search feature? Here is a site that will show you two ways to get that done in Nautilus: https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/enable-nautilus-type-ahead-in-ubuntu
One of the cool things about Linux Mint is that you can see your password represented as asterisks while you type it in. This isn't earth shattering, but it is convenient if you want to see some kind of feedback as you're typing your password into the terminal: https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2016/08/make-sudo-password-visible-terminal
Would you like to know more about what's coming down the pipeline for Gnome 43? Here are two very good pages describing the changes:

LINUX DIRTY PIPE PROBLEM
Sometimes bad actors inject bad code to do bad things to your computer and you end up having a bad day. Sometimes, there was a hole in the operating system that wasn't found for say, oh...about a year and a half. The nice thing about the Linux community is that it works very fast to fix the problem. Here are some links to understand what Dirty Pipe is about. Make sure your systems are up-to-date!

DO CORPORATE SPONSORS INFLUENCE LINUX?
Governments and Corporations are pulling out of some areas of the world due to conflicts and ideological concerns. Though Linux in general isn't a Corporate entity, different distributions and desktop environments are getting sponsorships or have partnerships with large players in the Tech world. How beholden are these distros and DE's? Are there backdoors in place to keep you from using your distro in the event things change where you are? Here's some food for thought...

CLI THINGS TO KNOW & GASLIGHTING
First off, I made a mistake in a previous video. A viewer sent me a message, so I'm here to pass along their wisdom. When you are upgrading your system in Debian based systems, please use "sudo apt dist-upgrade" and not just upgrade. The dist-upgrade is to upgrade your distribution and not just your software.
Here's a great page that defines these differences: https://linuxhint.com/apt_get_upgrade_dist_upgrade/
I cannot agree more on this tutorial. Don't let the trolls ruin your day. Don't use this command! https://linuxstans.com/sudo-rm-rf/
I sometimes hear the term "gaslighting" used in the wrong way. Just FYI: Here's a great explanation of what it really means: https://meanings.co/def/inquiry-where-does-the-term-gaslighting-come-from-94182/

I'm also going to talk about my experience with Windows 11. Yes, this is a Linux Channel, but Microsoft really did a nice job with 11!
I'm getting together a new channel, so this will be the last of my regular episodes for The Drunk Linux User. Look for my new series called, "The Sci Fi Analyst". I'll give those links out when I have my first show ready.
Thanks to everyone for watching, subscribing, and commenting! It's been great, and I've enjoyed learning more from you as well.

CRYPTO OPINION & AN MS PSA
Watching the latest changes going on with governmental approaches to cryptocurrency and internet availability, I thought I'd give my 2 cents American on Crypto. Keep in mind, this is ONLY MY opinion!
Also, Microsoft's Insider Program is now requiring a Microsoft Account to install Windows 11 Pro where previously it was only needed for Windows 11 Home. If this is getting you close to your breaking point with MS, consider installing Linux.

I JUST ABOUT GAVE UP!
Intermediate to Advanced Linux Users will wonder why I had so much trouble with VirtualBox. It wasn't that it was horribly difficult for me, and I was able to accomplish the task at hand. However, trying to come up with video instructions that discussed all of the ins-and-outs of getting VirtualBox and Linux Mint set up so that it was not only easy but made sense…well, it led to five attempts and numerous hours of recording, editing, deleting, and frustration. I want this series easy for the new or basic user to follow. What should really be a ten to fifteen minute video on setting up a Linux Distribution in VirtualBox on Windows ended up being close to 45 minutes. That's too long. People want easier answers, and I can appreciate that. So, why feel like giving up? If you can imagine that I was having a difficult time getting the instructions over easily and running into my own roadblocks, then you can appreciate where I'm coming from.
For all those who are willing to try a Linux distribution in Windows using VirtualBox, I'm working on paring down the instructions. Give me some time, and I'll have it ready for you. In the meantime, if you want to give it a spin yourself, here are some links you can use:

UH-OH! HOUSTON WE HAD A PROBLEM...
If you remember, I've mentioned before that Linux is typically more secure than other operating systems. Just a couple of days ago, we found there was a bug that was 12 years old that could cause a problem. Luckily, it's been patched/fixed in very short order. Even though Linux has less vulnerabilities (that we know of at the moment) than Windows or MacOS, it can still happen. Why? Because 'people' create the OS's, write the code, and as such it's difficult if not impossible to anticipate the varied ways other people will try to attack your code. Here are some interesting links for you:

CINNAMON TWEAKS
KDE and Gnome are well known for their ability to be tweaked the way the user wishes. They're not the only DE's that have a lot of fancy and unique enhancements. Linux Mint's Cinnamon has quite a bit as well. Take a look at this quick overview to get you started...

WHAT IS THIS KERNEL YOU SPEAK OF?
The Linux Kernel is like the heart and brains of the Linux Operation System when it comes to talking to your computer hardware and software instructions. Before you change anything, you should first determine if you actually need to update at all!

SPECIAL REQUEST #1 DOWNLOAD MANAGERS
I had a special request to feature one or the other of two Download Managers that can be used in Linux. So, I thought; Why not do both? Though this isn't an in-depth review of the software, here are two options that you might want to consider if you're downloading large or multiple files at once...

QPROMPT & KDE MINT?!?!
(I should have called this the "Experience" show...said it enough times...sheesh!) If you're looking for a free teleprompter for your computer, try QPrompt. I've used it before, and it's really nice. (Yeah, I know. Maybe I should be using it, now?): https://qprompt.app/
It's FOSS on QPrompt: https://itsfoss.com/qprompt/
WARNING! BACK UP YOUR DATA BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS NEXT HACK! ALSO, DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS ON YOUR MAIN PRODUCTION COMPUTER. TRY THIS IN A VIRTUAL MACHINE OR ANOTHER PARTITION FIRST! EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!
Someone wrote a comment about Linux Mint not supporting KDE. That sparked a memory (I do have one, but it's kinda selective.). There IS a way to install KDE on Linux Mint, but it might not work out as you expect. I'm going to offer the websites for you to read over to determine if you want to take the plunge or not. Please do not rush into this.

YOUR TURN
I have some questions for those considering Linux, and those of us who currently use Linux.
Why are you thinking about using Linux?
*Is it because you've heard it's not as virus prone as Windows or Mac?
*Is it because it's a free OS?
*Are you a fan of Open Source?
*Maybe it's because of Linux's flexibility?
If you're already using Linux, what made you decide to use Linux?
*It was something new to try? A Challenge?
*Did a friend suggest you try Linux?
*Did you read articles about Linux and thought you'd give it a try?
*Did your equipment finally get to the point where it couldn't keep up with the latest Windows or Mac updates?
Are you Dual Booting with another OS?
*Windows (which version)
*MacOS (Also, which version?)
*Another Linux Distro? (which distro & DE)
Are you using Linux Exclusively?
You can email me at nerd@drunklinuxuser.com if you don't want your user name associated with any answers or comments.
