Update: PlayStation folds on mandatory accounts and goes back to business as usual. Gamers win because gamers didn't give up! This is a huge victory! Helldivers 2 has been the biggest game of 2024, only to become the biggest disaster in gaming in 2024 in a few short days. Sony demanding Steam players sign up for a frequently hacked PSN account to continue to play the game is a monumentally dim idea, considering over 170 Countries do not have access to PSN. It's false advertising and shady business practices that create the an immediate backlash that a game, studio or company cannot hope to recover from. Couple this disaster with a Community Management team that is as inept as you can possibly get and this is not a disaster that will clear up anytime soon or be fixed to return the game to it's astronomical heights from a short few days ago. Deadpool & Wolverine finally has an official trailer ahead of its July 26th release. It's been a long time since there has been this much hype and speculation around a Marvel film, coupled with genuine enthusiasm. The key jangling seems to have worked, but hopefully Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman can provide the substance to the sizzle. Several confirmations have been provided. Cassandra Nova appears to be the villain, the story line appears to be some kind of an Old Man Logan adaptation and there is a multiverse. Hopefully something concrete comes of this to establish ground rules for Phase 5 and beyond, but only the end product can tell that tale. Madame Web was destined to fail, from the moment it was revealed her mother was in the Amazon researching spiders right before she died and that point was further driven home once the star of the production, Dakota Johnson, hit the interview circuit. What commenced was the most intentionally and unintentionally hilarious public tanking of a film you are likely to ever see. Microsoft has been buying up game developers at an unprecedented rate in recent years; Bethesda, Activision Blizzard, Ninja Theory, Obsidian, just to name a few. All in service of producing... nothing, or things that would have better off not being released. This was chiefly apparent with Bethesda dropping Starfield in 2023 and it landing with a resounding dud. Now in 2024, Microsoft is on the precipice of announcing they are giving up on exclusive games for Xbox and moving to wholly embracing the Game Pass model to allow everything, everywhere, all at once. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, the aforementioned Starfield, and the Gears of War franchise are expected to be amongst the announced former exclusive titles to make the trek to PlayStation and other platforms by the end of the year. It's both great and terrible news. A win for gamers in the short term, but if we are not careful, could spell the end of autonomy in the industry as we know it. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leagues is the biggest disaster in gaming in a very long time and its a well justified label. The monotonous gameplay, the insufferable sound design, the annoying characters and desecration of legendary heroes all collide in one game that everyone is taking issue with. No one, not The Flash, not Green Lantern, and certainly not Batman, was treated with respect. The never-ending push of Harley Quinn has reached new levels of insufferable, but it looks like this is a bridge too far. The tasteless tribute to the departed Kevin Conroy, sandwiched between an insufferable credit sequence and obnoxious level-up screens perfectly encapsulates why this is the worst example of all the blights on the gaming industry at the moment and no amount of cherry picked reviews can cover up the abysmal player engagement this turd is experiencing. Let it fail as spectacularly as it ruined all of the beloved DC characters. He had a hot take regarding the backlash against Palworld, in regards to the potential use of AI for art assets and took a swipe at entitled artists. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is almost here and the promotional tour from the people who worked on it has gotten off to a rough start. Yoshinori Kitase, Producer on Rebirth and Director of the original back in 1997, expressed some regret about how social problems, social issues and cultural depictions were handled with that seminal release. While that would normally be a reason to recoil with cringe, when you listen to what Kitase has to say beyond the headline, you quickly come to the conclusion that this is not indictive of someone looking to "modern audience" the upcoming release. Remake was and is amazing. I have personal high hopes for Rebirth.
