South Australia
These lyrics (minus the refrain) appear in a 1902 book by Charles August Keeler, titled, 'A Wanderer's Song of the Sea':
https://archive.org/details/awandererssongs01keelgoog/page/n26/mode/2up
I suspect the words in the book are all made up by Charles but loosely fitted to sea shanties or sea songs he had heard.
Charles was quite the adventurer, and may well have been to South Australia soon before publishing this book:

Always exciting when I find a Child Ballad where the only other version up on YouTube is the one by @raymondcrooke :

Another find ballad in the theme of fathers running through the young men they find in their daughter's beds.

Lament for Ukraine (by J.R.R.Tolkien)
In just three days it will be a full year that the people of #Ukraine have stood against the unprovoked aggression of #Russia on their own.
When are Gandalf and Riders of Rohan coming to their aid?

Ode XXIV by Anacreon (revisited)
I was looking to record a belated #ValentinesDay song for my beautiful wife, but then I realized that this 6th century B.C. poet was saying the equivalent of 'women should smile more'. Which is funny given that all his other poems are about drinking too much and chasing young women (and failing).
I think this translation (or more embellishment) is by Thomas Moore:
https://www.gutenberg.org/files/38230/38230-h/38230-h.htm#illo19
You can read the original Greek here (or maybe, like me, you can't):
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e6/The_odes_of_Anacreon_.._%28IA_odesofanacreo00anac%29.pdf
I have had a go at re-writing the last part of the poem:
To man she gave a feeble mind,
Always enslaved to womankind.
Slave of her beauty, and her power,
Lost without her for an hour.
To woman she gave the finest treasure,
Mother of life and queen of pleasure,
She gave beauty and spark of mind,
Wise and caring, strong and kind.

Anacreontic Song by Ralph Tomlison
I made a recording of the 'Star Spangled Banner' after the horrific invasion of the US Capitol building buy a bunch of dangerous nutters in 2021:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BsGT-abxqo
Today in the #Filkhaven chat I learnt of the rather hilarious/ironic origins of the melody.
Here are the lyrics:
https://www.potw.org/archive/potw234.html
And some details of the men's wine and music club from 1766:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anacreontic_Society
Importantly, it is the composer of the music, John Stafford Smith, that links this song to what became the US national anthem in 1931:

Someone more versed in Roman paganism may be able to explain what the significance of entwining myrtle with grape vines is. Possibly a connection to Bona Dea?

Tunnel Tigers by Ewan MacColl
Thanks to Sean Flynn from the Hackham Irish session in Adelaide for suggesting this song to me. Great to be back there after 5-6 years.
This is a song by Ewan MacColl:
https://mainlynorfolk.info/ewan.maccoll/songs/thetunneltigers.html
The use of 'Jack it / Ram it' and the Shield suggests that this is about the construction of the Thames Tunnel in the mid 1800s:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thames_Tunnel
Some detail in the collection here:
https://life-on-the-edge.org/2021/06/11/tunnel-vision-the-genius-of-marc-brunel/
A memorial for the Tunnel Tigers here:
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-49275881
MacColl probably didn't coin the 'Tunnel Tigers' term, as seen here in 1950:

Dark Eyed Rovers (Child #200)
It looks like I will finally get to deliver my talk on the research I did for my album of Colin Dryden songs at Easter this year. The National Folklore conference has been delayed since 2020.
While putting the presentation together today, I found this album from the Newcastle Folk Festival in 1974:
http://australianfolk.blogspot.com/2017/01/various-artists-newcastle-folk-festival.html
Colin sings this song in a blues style on the album, but the lyrics he uses don't match any of the Mainly Norfolk references:
https://mainlynorfolk.info/shirley.collins/songs/sevenyellowgipsies.html
It is reasonably similar to the version that Davey Graham does:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQzK9mgubwI
This site suggests some truth to the story:

By Ibrox Park by Alistair Hulett (Cover)
I drove back from Sydney this morning after singing at the Alistair Hulett Memorial Concert at the Gaelic Club in Sydney last night.
Photo of Alistair at the end was sent by Andy Carr (not sure if it is his photo).
This song was sung by Bob Fagan at the concert, with some lyric prompting by Chris Maltby.
Alistair singing this song here:

Scots words you might not know:
Troke: A cheat/swindler, mudcat has 'ill throckett dog', but 'throckett' doesn't seem to be a Scots
word, so maybe this is 'ill bargained dog'?
Thole: Suffer
Skeined: Skinned/Covered
Callant: A young man

Take Your Voice #AustraliaDay
Another Australia Day in 2023, still held on the day the marks the beginning of a European effort to stamp out a 65,000 year old culture. An effort that sadly continues today.
My thoughts here on the upcoming referendum of 2023. In my view, if the voice doesn't come with teeth, then it is just more condescending treatment of an ancient and strong culture. Make up your own mind here:
