The Fause Knight upon the Road (Child Ballad #3)
I have started from the 1818 snippet recorded in Charles Robert Maturin's book, 'Women: A Tale', and added bits of the many other variants collated here:
http://bluegrassmessengers.com/false-knight--madwoman-dublin-1818-maturin.aspx
This recording was prompted by Orit Klein Vartsky's recent appearance on 'The Folk Connection' in Israel (at around 38 minutes):

I Wasn't Always a Thief (Dungeons & Dragons - Honor Among Thieves)
Thanks to all those who watched my Lyre cover of this, it is by far the most watched video on my channel.
@toddwilliams5782 complained that my original version was too melancholy, so I've done this version closer to the @LornBalfe tune from the score, which you should have a listen to here:

First verse and chorus lyrics are by Jonathan Goldstein and John Daley, as tweeted here:

Also check out the @elfloreofficial cover (we are Bouzouki buddies):

Inter-Stellar Loving
Someone on Reddit (TriedAndTrueMethods) suggested I should do an album of alien songs, after hearing my 'Saucer Sources' song.
So for a bit of fun, I set myself the absurd task of writing an album in a day. I managed to write 9 songs in just over 3 hours.
This is one of them. Coming out on an album 'Area 51 and three quarters' soon. I'll publish the lyrics with the album.

Lasher (Paul Anka Parody)
I just finished watching the first season of the TV adaptation of Anne Rice's trilogy 'Lives of the Mayfair Witches':
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lives_of_the_Mayfair_Witches
I loved these books when they came out back in the 90s, and really enjoyed the TV adaptation, Alexandra Daddario is fabulous as Dr Rowan Fielding.
This song by Paul Anka seemed perfect for a #filk song:

The subject matter is fitting as well, with both song a series covering the ides of womanhood, possession, childbirth and family.

Joan's Ale was New
We were treated to a fantastic parody of this song which was focused on the dangers of fracking. When I went looking for the original I found this reference in a 1892 Gentlemen's Magazine to it being as old as 1594 (under 'Jone's Ale was Newe'):
https://archive.org/details/gentlemansmagaz78unkngoog/page/58
Here is the broadside I used for the lyrics (~1838):

Johnny and Mary by Robert Palmer (Ukulele Cover)
I loved this song when I heard it on the radio in the 1980s. I honestly had no idea what it was about, but just loved the mood.
Surprised to hear it is about political wives and the miserable lives they lead:

Ashes by Robbie Sattin - The Longest Johns (Cover)
As a fellow #seashanty enthusiast, I love the work that The Longest Johns (@thelongestjohns) do. On first listed of their 'Cures what Ails ya' album, I didn't realize that this song was about fighting the stifling old stewards of 'folk', that do their best to isolate and control the tradition.

Dainty Davie by Robert Burns (1793 Melody)
This alternate version of the words to Dainty Davie is attributed to Robert Burns and is included with a melody in this 1800 publication of his works:
https://archive.org/details/nationalburnsinc03burn
It is not clear to me where the melody that Luke Kelly uses, almost the same as the Furey's are using here:

This version of the melody (second tune in the set) is close, but doesn't quite match the 1793 text:

Dainty Davey
At the local book fair raising money for refugees I picked up a copy of the Merry Muses of Caledonia:
https://archive.org/details/merrymusesofcaleburn
This book is Robert Burn's secret collection of self written and collected bawdy songs.
I won't be recording any of the bawdy songs on this channel, but this version is the Dainty Davey that Burns based his far more intimate version on. That said, this song has its origins in a Minister, David Williamson who was been hidden in a house dressed as a woman while an outlaw in 1674.
The story is that David managed to impregnate the 18 year old daughter of Lady Cherrytree while he was 'hiding' in the bed. This song was doing the rounds during his lifetime:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Williamson_(minister)
There are quite a few more variations of this song that I will record.
I've based the melody on this fabulous version by Luke Kelly and the Dubliners:

Queen of the Kings - Alessandra Mele - Eurovision 2023 - Norway (Cover)
Folks that follow my channel will know that we are a big fans of the #Eurovision Song Contest. I didn't get up at 5am this morning to watch the first semi-final, but my daughter did. The rest of the family watched the replay tonight.
This was my favorite song from the semi-final, but I also loved #Finland and suspect it has a good chance of winning.
Here is the Music Video for this song for #Norway by Alessandra Mele (@alessandrasmusic ):
https://youtu.be/vSfffjHjdTk
I felt like there was a lot of nautical imagery in the song, and it sounds a little sea-shanty inspired.
Good luck to #AlessandraMele this is a fabulous song!

Princess Leia - Live at The Gov!
In Adelaide on a Wednesday night the finest crowd of Ukulele players gets together for a fantastic evening of music at The Governor Hindmarsh Hotel. Sometimes when I'm travelling I happen to be in town on the open mic night (first Wednesday of the month) and always try to get along:
https://www.thegov.com.au/
The open mic night is especially great because the multi-instrumentalists in the crowd often provide bespoke backing to performers. Facebook Group for the Adelaide Ukulele Appreciation Society here:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/24652197448
I had written this song for Princess Leia during the day, and put a melody and chords to it just 2-3 hours before the open mic:
https://www.folklounge.org/portfolio/princess-leia/
Richard, Alex and Jacqui provided impromptu backing on my first run through (having never heard the song before), and it being 3rd May, we did a second run through which was kindly filmed by Pam.
Best Star Wars day every!

I'm not sure if this is genuine pagan history still living, or possibly a recent tradition embellished for the benefit of folk academics and tourists. Watching the teaser and the Oss, I tend to believe it is the first.

Achilles by Patrick Shaw-Stewart
This poem appears in the biography that Ronald Knox wrote for Lieutenant Commander Patrick Shaw-Stewart:
https://archive.org/details/patrickshawstewa00knoxrich
The poem isn't titled, but was found written in Patrick's copy of 'The Shropshire Lad'.
It is #ANZAC day here in Australia, when our inability to learn the lessons of War is pondered.
Patrick was killed in action (by a shell) at the age of 29. While Patrick was a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy when he died, he called himself a 'Major' in letters, possibly because he spent time working with the Army.

The Battle is Over (Dungeons & Dragons Movie - Honor Among Thieves)
Thanks to @qplane8659 for suggesting I have a go at this one.
The #HornyBard song that we know Jonathan Goldstein and John Daley wanted to write but weren't allowed to put in the movie.
There is only a snippet of this song in the film, but I have added these verses:
And now we are drinking, me mind gets to thinking,
That lass has a smile, that my heart’s beguiled,
The sway of her hips, and her ample charms dancing,
I’ll buy her a drink and hope she’ll come to bed,
The life of a fighter is often times lonely,
And these two strong arms are in want of a man,
If he’s of small stature, I’ll dream of him only,
And pine for his charms just as long as I can,
The sorcerers needs and somewhat non-standard,
The shape-shifters talents are highly desired,
And if he can woo her, their play will be magic,
They’ll fill up their night until both are tired,
So grab your companions and drink of loves bounty,
The limits of pleasure are all in your head,
For now is the time to kiss and to cuddle,
For love will be flown by the time you are dead.

Bushman's Ballad
I get invited to play in some interesting places, this weekend was no exception as I attended the Kosciuszko Huts Associations woodworking weekend on a property in Wee Jasper.
Fabulous to see people keeping trades alive that would otherwise be lost to us, and fighting to keep the high-country huts in close to original condition, rather than being replaced by pre-fabricated monstrosities.
Thanks to Nathan for the invite, and all the people who worked to put the weekend together.

Facebook Hackers by #ChatGPT
Some good friends recently had their Facebook accounts hacked. And not just fake profiles impersonating them, but properly compromised accounts, which were then used to try and attack others. These hackers are scum of the earth.
I asked ChatGPT to write a folk song about it for me. These are the words it produced on the first go. I then asked it to add chords. I added a bit more to the chorus chords, but it is otherwise what ChatGPT gave me.
I have been watching the recent news articles about rapid AI advances with some terror. As a songwriter, this is extra terrifying. I would have probably taken 30-40 minutes to write a song about this, it would have been better, but how much better? And will anyone be willing to pay for 'better' in the future?

Cane Killed Abel by Merv Lilley
I found this song in a hardcopy version of 'Eureka: Songs that Made Australia' compiled by Warren Fahey (@bodgiefahey ) and published in 1984.
I came by this book thanks to the Yass Historical Society, who were downsizing due to a forced eviction (thankfully they have since found temporary accommodation).
The song appears in Chris Kempster's songbook here:
https://www.bushtraditions.org/music/songs/Kempster%20songbook.pdf
Photos of cane harvesting and growing from Trove. I grew up in a Queensland Cane farming town, so this subject matter is quite familiar.
I cannot find a good biographical link to Merv Lilley, so grateful for suggestions.
