You Can't Choose Your Family
It was this photoshopped picture of my beautiful family, posted in 2017, which prompted a friend to introduce me to Filk.
This video is me working on my song entry for the themed songwriting contest at the Ohio Valley Filk Festival coming up in October.
A big congratulations to all the nominees for Pegasus awards at the festival this year:

Love Minus Zero/No Limit by Bob Dylan (Cover)

Rich Men North of Richmond by Oliver Anthony (Cover)
As a topical songwriter, it is hard not to take notice of the recent interest in Oliver Anthony's song lamenting the state of things in in the #USA.
You can listen to the original song here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqSA-SY5Hro
The song was quickly adopted by the Right side of US politics, but the response from Oliver suggests that this wasn't his intent:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3tQ5Pz0fUI
I have taken out the swears, and also re-written the part having a go at overweight people and the part making light of child abuse and sex trafficking. I've also tried to make it more about the global problem of income inequality.
Dave Rovics (@drovics ) has also had a go at a re-write:

Love of the Page
Today was one of our favourite days at the local school, the 'Book Week' parade. After several weekends of work, my son Finn got to be a Dalek, just as his older brother had been back in 2019, and Rowan made a fabulous Peter Capaldi. The photos cover 13 years of costumes and fun.
I wrote this song musing on the value of giving kids a love for reading at a young age, and the freedom to imagine themselves as anything they want to.

Robbin & Bobbin
I love it when someone on the internet knows more about something than you do, and as a result you discover something amazing.
Thanks to @Wotsitorlabart I found this version of 'The Cutty Wren' that pre-dates my recent 1857 recording by over 100 years.
You can flip through the whole Tommy Thumb's Pretty Song Book here:
https://www.bl.uk/collection-items/tommy-thumbs-pretty-song-book
Earliest printing around 1744.
It certainly adds fuel to Lloyd's linking of the song with Richard II and the Peasant Revolt. His name is even in the song!

The Cutty Wren
I found this amazing recording of Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick from 1969, where this song is used in the context of English class conflict:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kd2V4XaiH6M
We have many hundreds of beautiful Fairy Wren's living in our yard and the surrounding river land here in Australia. Photos of wren's from Pixabay.
The lyrics (and most of the melody) I am using here is from The Cambrian Journal, in 1857:
https://archive.org/details/cambrianjournal04cambuoft/page/182
The Cambrian tradition seems clearly connected to the Wren Boys of Ireland:
https://pilgrimagemedievalireland.com/2016/12/25/an-irish-st-stephens-day-tradition-la-an-dreoilinwren-day/
https://www.sligoheritage.com/archwrenboys.htm
The lyrics in this Cambrian version make it very clear that the boys are going out to hunt something considerably larger than a wren.

Song of Amergin
I didn't start the day intending to put another album out, but a comment from @tenlongfingers70 got me thinking about how many Pagan songs I have written that aren't on albums yet.
So the new album is out on Bandcamp now:
https://ozfolklounge.bandcamp.com/album/four-treasures
And will be on Spotify and the other streaming platforms in a few days.
I have taken the translation of Amergin's chant from here:
https://archive.org/details/leborgablare00macauoft/page/112
This isn't the very inaccurate Robert Graves creation.

Given the heavy religious, and specifically Christian imagery, I have used paintings by Russian painter Mikhail Nesterov:

Salt Junk Sarah by Norman Lindsay
This song appears in the 1918 story by Norman Lindsay 'The Magic Pudding':
https://gutenberg.org/cache/epub/23625/pg23625-images.html
The song is likely based (at least in part) on the mid-1800s song by Charles Mackay:

This is.. well.. the 80s I guess:

Child's Blessing by Leslie Fish (Cover/New Setting)
Very exciting news that a Leslie Fish songbook, of close to 500 pages has been published today:
https://www.prometheus-music.com/product/leslie-fishs-filkbook/
I was honored to have some small involvement in the creation of an index that is available for free download at the page above.
This is one of the songs that hasn't made it into this release of the songbook. As there was no melody with the lyrics, I have created a new one.
This song appears on my own album of cover songs of Leslie's work:
https://ozfolklounge.bandcamp.com/album/fishing-fur-infinity
I have paired the song with paintings by Evelyn De Morgan:

Hymn to the Night-Mare by Leslie Fish - Fishing fur Infinity
I am working on a new album, consisting of my recordings of songs by Leslie Fish and a few related tracks.
Proceeds from the album, when it is released on Bandcamp, will be split with Leslie.
I have a few recordings done already, but will be re-recording those that need it over the next few weeks.
You can listen to Leslie's recording from Avalon is Risen here:

Hopefully soon there will be a songbook available for purchase, thanks to the excellent work that Eli Goldberg has been doing to preserve Leslie's work.

Blue Velvet - Cover - Vale Benedetto
Tony Bennett (Anthony Dominick Benedetto) lived with the experience of combat in Word War II, the horrors of Dachau and all the other nightmares of war. To continue making music for 96 years is truly amazing:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Bennett
This song, by Bernie Wayne and Lee Morris was a hit for Tony in 1951.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-Pay5LHY4g
#Benedetto #TonyBennett #BlueVelvet
The strange thing about growing up in the 70s, is that you assume all the black & white movie people lived and performed at the same time. So I didn't realize that Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. were as far apart in time musically to Tony Bennett as Madonna is to Pink.
