Disney released a memo stating they will no longer be reporting box office results for The Marvels which means they don’t expect any significant gains. This despite the movie set to play in theaters through the new year. The Marvels has not been able to generate $300 million at the global box office so far. The reported budget is around $270 million, but these estimates are likely under reporting. It’s becoming more apparent digital purchases are glorified rentals. Sony announced their play store would remove hundreds of titles from Discovery that users previously purchased. This upset many Sony PlayStation users who learned they will no longer be able to access the content they thought they owned. The move comes after Sony was not able to renew a licensing agreement with Discovery which allowed them to sell digital versions of popular TV shows and movies. This is not the first time a major streaming platform has removed content people purchased; in fact, Sony has done this very thing before. Users are under the impression when they purchase a digital version of a show, movie, game, etc., they now own it. Early projections for the new DCEU film Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom staring Jason Mamoa are in and they’re not looking too good. The early projections have it opening to less than the previous Aquaman movie and in line with DC’s other big superhero flop this year The Flash. Despite all of this, things are not over yet. The latest casting rumors surround Disney and Marvel’s new MCU movie Fantastic Four says The Menu and The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy will be playing the role of the Silver Surfer as a gender swapped version of the character. This goes in line with what has been seen in recent years with Disney and Marvel choosing to replace male characters with female version, but usually that takes the form of creating a female version of the character to take on the “mantle” of the character. One of the writers for The Marvels, a movie that is set to loose hundreds of millions for Disney and Marvel, was hired on by Amazon to write their announced Tomb Raider series. Writer Megan McDonnell will be joined by Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge who the company already announced will be writing and producing the upcoming series. Disney’s new animated feature film, Wish, is celebrating a milestone by being the 100th animated movie from Disney and is produced by the Walt Disney Animation Studios. It was announced Melissa Barrera was fired from the upcoming Scream movie due to tweets she made in support of Palestine. Since then, it was announced Jenna Ortega will no longer be apart of the next Scream movie. Some are speculating Jenna Ortega left the project in solidarity with Melissa Barrera, her on screen sister. The evidence at hand suggests the office story is more accurate. Jenna Ortega only signed on for the two Scream movies she already filmed. Since signing onto the Scream reboot/sequel her career blew up. Disney and Marvel Studios are radically changing course with how they produce future MCU projects following a disastrous year for the once great brand. Long time fans and general audience have grown tired of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and will not habitually go to every new release. Since the announcement of a live-action Legend of Zelda movie many media outlets and activists have been trying to artificially prop up Hunter Schafer as a natural choice to play Zelda.
