Legendary Disney animator John Musker, whose career with the company spanned nearly 4 decades, said in a recent interview that Disney movies have a problem with putting their message above entertainment. The veteran writer and animator with classic such as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, amongst others, said in the past they would have messages included in their movies, but the entertainment came first. Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer said in a recent interview that he has been talking with Johnny Depp about him coming back to the franchise following his trial win against ex-wife Amber Heard. Johnny Depp was famously fired from the franchise he helped build and a jury determined his ex-wife defaming him was the primary factor for him getting removed. The stock value for Ubisoft dropped around 15% following the company’s announcement of its 2024 market prediction. Othe market analysts have assessed the company is well below where they should be. However, Ubisoft believe upcoming releases like Star Wars Outlaws and Assassin’s Creed Shadows should help the company rebound. Of course various financial experts are not so sure given the widely reported backlash to both of those games. FX has announced they are working on seasons 2 & 3 of the series Shogun after it’s wild success as a limited run series on Hulu. The show was initially supposed to be just one season, but the Disney owned company is trying to work with the estate of the original book’s author to continue with the series. It is being reported that Marvel’s Hawkeye will be getting a second season during a time when Disney CEO Bob Iger said the company is going to focus more on quality over quantity. Season one of Hawkeye had decent audience score on reviews sites like Rotten Tomatoes, but viewership data was disappointing for Disney. HBO Max released a trailer for season 2 of their series House of the Dragon immediately following Amazon Prime releasing the trailer for the new season of The Rings of Power. Amazon tried to build anticipation for their latest announcement by creating a 15 second teaser the day before; however, Max just decided to release their trailer with little to no fan-fare. So far the trailer for House of the Dragon has a way better reception than Rings of Power. This goes to show many of the excuses for Rings of Power such as misogynists hating strong women fall flat since many of the same people dismissing the Prime Video series also love House of the Dragon which also feature strong female characters. The difference being the Game of Thrones spin-off handles it well. Amazon released the first trailer to their upcoming Lord of the Rings series The Rings of Power and it look like another flop for Prime Video. The first season for The Rings of Power was likely the most expensive show of all time to produced, but that investment for Amazon Studios didn’t pay off. Review aggregate site didn’t have positive scores for audiences, and sources indicate the less than half of the people who started the show finished it. Much of this backlash had to do with the fact the creatives behind The Lord of the Rings series intentionally went against the lore established by JRR Tolkien in order to push their own agenda. Electronic Arts, EA, CEO Andrew Wilson said the company is looking for ways to incorporate ads into their games in a manner they have not done before. EA has not been a stranger to incorporating product placement or other unobtrusive ads into their games before, but during the Q1 earnings call Wilson told investors they are looking at additional avenues to increase revenue and more advertisement in games is a possibility. This is likely a response to triple A developers having a difficult time in recent years thanks to the poor reception of newer games and the ballooning budgets. Following the announcement of the upcoming Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, Warner Bros. Discovery decided to copyright strike a 15 year old fan film of the same title. The fan film uploaded to the YouTube page Independent Online Cinema had received over 13 million views since the video was uploaded. On their personal website they highlight positive quotes from media outlets around the world as well as awards their film has received. Since the short film follows the appendices of The Lord of the Rings it seems like Warner Bros. submitted their copyright strike to YouTube since the upcoming movie written by Peter Jackson and directed by Andy Serkis will follow a similar plot. It’s being reported Peter Jackson will be returning to Middle Earth for a new live action Lord of the Rings movie titled The Hunt for Gollum. Peter Jackson will be writing the movie along with previous Lord of the Rings collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Andy Serkis will star as the titular Gollum as well as direct the movie. Andy Serkis has previously worked as the 2nd unit director in The Hobbit films as well as directed a number of movies himself. During Disney’s earnings call CEO Bob Iger said the company is going to devote more effort into producing movies with established Ips because it’s easier to market. Niantic released a new update for Pokémon GO which has resulted in game breaking bugs for some users, particularly those who use Android devices. This new glitch involves players who choose to enable the native refresh rate setting in order to have a better gameplay experience. Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 has been the one bright spot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for 2023 since every other entry has been a massive bomb for Marvel Studios and Disney. Netflix released the first trailer for the 6th and final season of Cobra Kai set to be released in 3 parts this summer. In a departure from the previous 10 episode seasons for Cobra Kai, the final season will be comprised of 3 five episode parts released months apart. The final installment will premiere in early 2025. Universal Studios Orland revealed some of their plans for the upcoming Epic Universe park expansion set to open next year. Most of the announcements were about the anticipated Super Nintendo World portion of Universal’s Epic Universe with the new attractions featuring a Mario Kart, Yoshi, and Donkey Kong rides. Disney released a teaser trailer for their upcoming animated movie that they’re claiming is live-action Mufasa: The Lion King and the audience does not seem very excited. The Mufasa: The Lion King trailer on Walt Disney Studios official YouTube page has more dislikes than likes with many of the comments being either negative or mocking the film. Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy says people do not have to have seen anything else in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, MCU, in order to see his upcoming Deadpool film. Shawn Levy said the goal of his movie was to make something the fans of the MCU fan enjoy, but something still accessible for newcomers. This way audiences don’t feel like they need to get caught up on anything prior to the new release. This is a decent approach for Marvel since they have lost a huge chunk of their audience thanks to their mishandling of the MCU following Avengers Endgame. Sony announced their next Spider-Man spinoff, Kraven the Hunter, is getting its release date pushed back again. This time from August 2024 until December. The comic book movie starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson has already been delayed several times, but Sony made this move, at least according to them, in response to their upcoming Karate Kid movie getting delayed so its release can coincide with the next season of Cobra Kai. This doesn’t appear to be good news on Sony’s part. Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver has not only fell in the Netflix streaming charts, but viewership for Zack Snyders follow-up movie was substantially less than Rebel Moon – Part One. The sci-fi opera started strong during its opening week, but it appears low critics and audience scores kept all but Zack Snyder’s most loyal fans from tuning in. Financial records from Lucasfilm show Disney have yet to reach profitability after purchasing the company and all of its properties from George Lucas back in 2012 for $4 billion. Despite some early box office success, Disney has been met with failure after failure for the Lucasfilm franchise. This started with Solo: A Star Wars Story all the way to their most recent Indian Jones film which lost over $100 million conservatively. As a result, there are rumors circulating that Disney will be bringing George Lucas back in an unknown roll for a future Star Wars project in order to appease audiences.
