(The following is from Wikipedia) The Atari ST was born from the rivalry between home computer makers Atari, Inc. and Commodore International. Atari Corporation was an American manufacturer of computers and video game consoles. It was founded by Jack Tramiel on May 17, 1984, as Tramiel Technology, Ltd., but then took on the Atari name less than two months later when Warner Communications sold the home computing and game console assets of Atari, Inc. to Tramiel. Its chief products were the Atari ST, Atari XE, Atari 7800, Atari Lynx and Atari Jaguar. Atari merged with JTS Inc. in 1996, becoming a small division which itself closed after JTS sold all Atari assets to Hasbro Interactive in 1998. Millions of Atari systems were sold world-wide and the name became synonymous with home gaming and home computers.

This video gives a short intro followed by an original IBM film on how to upgrade your AS/400 to the PowerPC technology with RISC architecture. HD photos and color illustrations describe the 64bit architecture, PowerPC upgrade methodology, and upgrade tips. Vintage 1994-1996, with the big advancement in technology and rebranding the AS/400 to the “Advanced Series,”’ IBM went from the beige color (white) format to the now familiar "all black" case design in May 1994. Originally called the "Silverlake" project, the AS/400 was highly successful minicomputer line, selling over 500,000 units. Many systems survive today, including evolution into more modern versions of the architecture. The 400 was IBM's most successful minicomputer family, replacing the IBM System/36 and IBM System/38 computer lines. A nice look back at the continuing evolution of this iconic mid-range computer. Vintage Film on Automation: Computers and Machines: A mid-1960’s look at Automation discusses COMPUTERS, punched paper tape programs, check-sorting, and AUTOMATED FACTORY MACHINES. A low-key introduction to the subject of Automation, the film also presents a well narrated tour of the factory automation at LANGENDORF BAKERY facility in Los Angeles which was famous for many years, and was eventually bought by American Bakeries, Inc. in 1964. Run time: 11 minutes
About Langendorf Bakeries
Bernard Langendorf came to America from Vienna, Austria when he was sixteen. He moved his small Chicago bakery to San Francisco in 1895, establishing Langendorf's Vienna Bakery on Folsom Street, south of Market Street.
After the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire destroyed his bakery, Bernard re-opened at 878 McAllister, near Laguna. Over the years the bakery grew to over 20 locations throughout the West Coast, from Los Angeles, California to Seattle, Washington. It was owned and operated by Langendorf’s sons, until the business was sold to American Bakeries, Inc., in 1964. American Bakeries Company also owned the “Kream Krust” bread trademark, seen in the film.

AS/400 Megabytes are Heavy, the high-end of IBM Minicomputer Hardware (short parody)
150722 Like and subscribe. This is an archive, check the link in the end if you are owner. (A Short Parody) . The IBM AS/400 (Application System/400) is a family of mid-range computers from IBM announced in June 1988. Originally code-named “Silverlake.” Various models ranged in size small footprint units to the giant B-60 model (seen in this video) weighing over 1,100 pounds (500kg). The 400 was the more powerful and less expensive successor to IBM’s popular System/36 and System/38 minicomputers. It ran the OS/400 operating system. The AS/400 was extremely successful at launch, with an estimated 111,000 installed by the end of 1990, increasing to 250,000 installations by 1994, and about 500,000 shipped by 1997. One of its great benefits was the vast amount of third party software that was also available for a wide range of applications.
The AS/400 family line was rebranded several times in the 1990s and 2000s as IBM introduced newer generations of hardware and operating system.

************ THE "23" Hacker Film: The video clip shown is from the German film - "23" ( made in 1998) Directed by Hans-Christian Schmid. The movie’s plot is based on the true story of a group of young computer hackers from Hannover, Germany. In the late 1980s the orphaned Karl Koch invests his heritage in a flat and a home computer. At first he dials up to bulletin boards to discuss conspiracy theories inspired by his favorite novel, R.A. Wilson’s “Illuminatus”, but soon he and his friend David start breaking into government and military computers. The vintage part of that film we found interesting is the purchase and transport of an AS/400 (probably B60 model). The film exists on EU Blu-Ray disk, but we have not found anywhere to stream it in German or English subtitles. If you find it, please let us know. Thanks! ~ CHAP

1987 IBM PS/2 Computer Family Classic Intro (microcomputer history, micro channel architecture)
140722 Like and subscribe. This is an archive, check the link in the end if you are owner. Computer History: IBM Introduced Personal System 2 in 1987, designed to replace the original IBM PC family, with new and improved architecture. This classic and well designed ad introduces the new machines and their potential. Not a typical 30 or 60 second spot, but a full 7 minute intro, highlighting the features of PS/2. The PS/2 technology was built around IBM's Micro Channel Architecture ("MCA"), and was an attempt by IBM to recapture proprietary control over its microcomputer line with a more robust, but licensed, core technology. A variety of models were produced from low end to very high end, (nearly $20,000 at the top end), and a great many systems were sold. However, the PS/2 line was not really successful long term in capturing the PC marketplace.
MCA was designed to be a competitor to the ISA ("Industry Standard Architecture") bus and had several new features over ISA which promised greater efficiency. However, IBM's MCA bus was proprietary and required licensing fees, and never became widely used. IBM embarked on a large scale promotion of the PS/2 line, including commercials featuring some of the original M*A*S*H TV series actors. However, MCA did not capture a large market and was overtaken by the ISA bus technology. ISA itself was later superseded by Intel's Peripheral Component Interconnect or "PCI" bus in 1992. We found this particular ad quite well done, and worth some editing improvements and uploading. Hope you enjoy this look back. (Computer History Archives Project - CHAP)

FACTS ABOUT THE LUNAR ROVING VEHICLE
There were many early concepts and ideas of how a lunar rover vehicle should be designed. The final contract went to Boeing in 1969.
Building the LRV began at Boeing’s Kent, Washington plant. GMs' Delco Electronics Division built the electrical components.
Boeing made four rovers; three went to the moon, one each on Apollo Missions 15, 16 and 17.
Total cost was about $38 million.
It weighed about 462 pounds and could carry 1,080 pounds. Cruising speed was around 8 mph. (Apollo 17 rover achieved 11 mph, with downhill assist.)
Made primarily of aluminum alloy, it was about 10 feet long, 6 feet wide, with a 7-1/2 foot wheel base, and foldable into the Lunar modules.
Two 36-volt batteries powered four 1/4-horsepower electric motors (one at each wheel). Batteries were Silver/zinc potassium hydroxide batteries. Each tire was made of a woven mesh of zinc-coated piano wire to which titanium treads were riveted in a chevron pattern
The rovers allowed the astronauts to perform significantly more surface work in less time, and added greatly to the knowledge gained by scientists in each of the three missions.
Apollo 15 - July 26, 1971
Apollo 16 – April 16, 1972
Apollo 17 - Dec. 7, 1972

Brief History of MOTOROLA 1930 - 1997 (auto radios, TV, Cell phones, microprocessors)
020622 Like and subscribe. This is an archive, check the link in the end if you are owner. A brief history of MOTOROLA from 1930 to about 1997, originally produced for the “Motorola Museum of Electronics,” which opened in 1991, but unfortunately ceased operating years ago. Motorola is well known for radios, televisions, cellular phones and many other electronic devices. This is nevertheless a very nice historical look back at the early days of an iconic company as it was up to around 1997. It has a fascinating technology and corporate history since that time as well including success with a large number of cell phone products and communications technologies. Color, 12 minutes.
Interesting Corporate Changes:
On January 4, 2011, Motorola Inc. was split into two publicly traded companies; “Motorola Solutions and “Motorola Mobility.”
On August 15, 2011, American tech company Google announced that it would acquire “Motorola Mobility” one of the successor companies, for $12.5 billion. Three years later, on January 29, 2014, Google announced it would, sell Motorola Mobility to the Chinese technology company Lenovo. Lenovo announced in 2016 that it would not use the “Motorola” brand name on future products.

More info from the ESRI web site: A geographic information system (GIS) is a system that creates, manages, analyzes, and maps all types of data. GIS connects data to a map, integrating location data (where things are) with all types of descriptive information (what things are like there). This provides a foundation for mapping and analysis that is used in science and almost every industry. GIS helps users understand patterns, relationships, and geographic context. The benefits include improved communication and efficiency as well as better management and decision making.

Remembering WANG COMPUTERS & WORD PROCESSING 1973-1981 Office Automation Minicomputers
170522 Like and subscribe. This is an archive, check the link in the end if you are owner. A short non-technical look back at some of WANG's early computers and Word Processors 1973-1981.
From the 1970’s to the mid 1980’s, Wang Laboratories was a global leader in word processing and office automation. Founded in 1951 in Massachusetts, it established headquarters in Cambridge, then Tewksbury and finally Lowell, Mass. At its peak in the 1980s, annual revenue reached $3 billion, with over 33,000 employees.
IN 1955, Wang produced an early computer (WEDILOG digital differential analyzer) for U.S. Gov.
In the mid-1960s, Wang Labs introduced innovative electronic calculators, including the “logarithmic calculating instrument” or LOCI in 1964, and the programmable LOCI-2, in 1965. Wang also released a variety of products, including the successful 300, and 700 series calculators.
WORD PROCESSING and BUSINESS COMPUTING
The Wang model 1200 of 1972 could perform basic word processing functions, but lacked a CRT screen.
Wang released the Model 2200 minicomputer in May 1973. It had a video display screen, keyboard and cassette tape drive; 4k RAM and “BASIC” language built-in. The 2200 was very successful, selling over 10,000 units in the first few years.
Wang is especially remembered for its very successful Wang WPS, Word Processing System, introduced in June 1976; it sold 5,000 units in the first two years. Word Processing Computers became highly popular in the mid 1970’s and ‘80’s. By 1980, Wang dominated the dedicated word processing market.
Wang worked to integrate its OIS (Office Information Systems) line and its Wang VS (Virtual Storage) line to facilitate office automation during the late 1970's and early 1980's.
Wang products continued in use for years. Due to market losses, however, Wang filed for bankruptcy in 1992 and underwent restructuring. In 1999, Wang Global acquired by by Dutch computer firm Getronics for $2 billion. In 2007, CompuCom Systems, Inc., acquired the North American operations of Getronics.

The following presentation we have assembled focuses on the origin of the IBM System/360 mainframe computer family, IBM’s most successful computer product line and one of the most influential computer system architectures of the twentieth century. IBM invested $5 billion in resources to develop the new architecture and multiple system models. Announced on April 7, 1964, it revolutionized mainframe processing and secured IBM’s position as the large systems leader for decades to come. Vintage films and photos describing various models of the 360 in different environments are courtesy of IBM Archives, NASA Archives and other sources. Compiled by the Computer History Archives Project (CHAP). Run time: 15 minutes.
Background information:
The System/360 is considered a Third Generation Computer.
The System/360 architecture included sixteen 32–bit registers. The 360 family was designed to meet the needs of business, scientific and government computing customers. The 360 became highly influential and a vital part of computing technology used by NASA's various Apollo missions, educational institutions, research centers, airline reservation systems, and much more.
The system cost varied greatly depending on model and configuration.
A complete lower end system was about $2 million (equivalent to $18.2 million in 2022).
The largest model (195) was priced at $7 to $12 million. ($64 million to $109.5 million in 2022).
Monthly system rentals started at about $20,000 ($182,000 in 2022).
The most popular model sold was the Model 65.
It was replaced by the IBM System/370 family, but many remained in service for years.
