Born in Egypt, Mary became a public woman in Alexandria at the age of 12 and continued for 17 years before being moved by a force preventing her from entering the church during a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. She realized her impure life prevented her from seeing the life-giving cross and begged the Virgin Mary to obtain forgiveness for her sins, promising to renounce the world and live in chastity. With a renewed sense of hope, Mary crossed the Jordan and lived in the desert for 47 years, enduring extreme deprivation and temptations until her complete victory over them by the grace of God. A chance meeting with St. Zosimus led to her first reception of Holy Communion, which she had not received since her conversion. She asked him to bury her body in the sand when she passed away, which he did, and an inscription in the sand was found by her head. St. Mary of Egypt is a remarkable example of how no one is beyond redemption, and how true contrition and penance can lead to sainthood. St. Mary of Egypt, Pray for us. Catholic Drive Time - 877-757-9424 Date – Thursday, March 30th - 2023 – Bl. Amadeus, Duke of Savoy Bl. Amadeus, Duke of Savoy, was born in 1435 and succeeded his father Louis as the Duke of Savoy. He married Yolanda of Valois, sister of Louis XI, King of France, and had 10 children. Despite his high position, he treated his subjects with kindness and did not exploit them or involve them in useless wars. He was severe with libertines, money changers, and blasphemers. He was known for his goodness to the poor and administered his state with a Christian spirit. He fasted rigorously, prayed, and did penance. He suffered from epilepsy and his health deteriorated in the last year of his life, but he saw his afflictions as a path to the Kingdom of God. He died in 1472 at the age of 37. Bl. Amadeus was a model ruler who demonstrated a balance of power and goodness. He was a father and protector of the people, and his actions did not promote revolutionary germs. In a communication sent on Wednesday afternoon to journalists, Holy See Press Office director Matteo Bruni issued a statement informing that: "This afternoon, the Holy Father went to Gemelli for some previously scheduled check-ups." Customary General Audience As is customary, the Holy Father presided over the Wednesday General Audience in St Peter's Square on Wednesday morning. In recent days Pope Francis has complained of some respiratory difficulties and in the afternoon went to the Policlinico A. Gemelli in Rome to undergo some medical check-ups. His name, fortitudo Dei, meaning the power of God, reflects the nature of his message, which announced the Incarnation of the Word and the victory over the Devil. St. Gabriel is also the devotee of Mary par excellence, revealing to her that she was to be the Mother of God and helping her understand her mission. The message he delivered is one of essential purity, announcing the virginal maternity of Mary and God's love for purity. St. Gabriel is also seen as a special protector of purity. Catholic Drive Time - 877-757-9424 Date – Thursday, March 23rd - 2023 – St. Toribio de Mogrovejo St. Toribio de Mogrovejo was a Spanish bishop born in 1538, known for his exceptional prudence and zeal in reforming the Catholic Church in Peru. He was appointed by King Philip II to be the head of the Inquisition in Granada, Spain, where he carried out his office exceptionally for five years. In 1581, he was appointed bishop of Lima, Peru, where he worked to reform the clergy and protect the oppressed, particularly the Indian population. He was criticized and persecuted for his efforts but received support from the virtuous Viceroy who had recently arrived in Lima. St. Toribio also had great devotion to the Most Holy Virgin and a rigorous spiritual life. He died on March 23, 1606, with the words of Jesus Christ on his lips: “Lord, into Thy hands I commend my spirit.” St. Toribio de Mogrovejo, Pray for us. Catholic Drive Time - 877-757-9424 Date – Tuesday, March 21st - 2023 – St. Nicholas of Flue St. Nicholas of Flue was born in Switzerland in 1417 and died in 1487. His parents were peasants who recognized his intelligence and piety, and they provided him with a better education. At age 23, he was called to arms against the canton of Zurich and eventually became a captain with 100 men under his command. However, he showed a profound spirit of hierarchy and declined an important public post, stating that he was from humble origins. He later became a hermit, and his body is preserved in the Church of Sachseln, decorated with gold and precious stones. He was known as Brother Klaus and was often called on by dignitaries to make peace between the cantons in their continuous disputes. Pilgrims came from distant parts to consult him. He was exiled from Jerusalem three times due to his orthodoxy and opposition to Arianism. Despite this, he remained steadfast in his beliefs and played a crucial role in achieving doctrinal unity and peace. He is remembered for his work, The Catecheses, which was focused on preparing catechumens and neophytes. St. Cyril is an example of a heroic bishop who left a legacy to build the Middle Ages. His fight against heresies, along with other saints and heroes, helped establish the Catholic State and set the foundations for Scholasticism. Prof. Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira notes that we should fight for the Church with the certainty that we are defeating the Revolution and the knowledge that our efforts, even if they go unrecognized, will be recognized by God on the Day of Judgment. Catholic Drive Time - 877-757-9424 Date – Thursday, March 16th - 2023 – St. Abraham of Kidunaia St. Abraham of Kidunaia was born in Mesopotamia in the 4th century to wealthy nobles who planned a marriage for him. On the last day of his wedding celebration, he slipped away secretly to live in solitude in a cave in the desert. After 17 days, he was found and left in his solitude. When his parents died, he inherited their fortune and gave half of it to the poor. He was eventually asked by the Bishop of Edessa to go to the neighboring city of Beth-Kidunaia, where he built a Catholic church and preached to the idolaters there. After three years, the people of Kidunaia converted to the Catholic faith. St. Abraham later brought his niece to his cave to live with him, but she was seduced and became a prostitute. After discovering the truth, he went to the city to bring her back and she repented. St. Abraham lived to the age of 70, and after his death, many people came to his cave to receive his blessing. He defended the Catholic Faith against the rationalism of the 18th century and Enlightenment thinking, and he did not cede an inch to the threat of preaching to empty pews. His position was counter-revolutionary, and he fought against the motto: "Cede to not lose." His life serves as an example to Catholics today who must speak the whole truth and stand up against the forces that oppose the Church. Catholic Drive Time - 877-757-9424 Date – Tuesday, March 14th - 2023 – St. Anthony of Carthage St. Anthony of Carthage was born in North Africa in the late 15th century and sold as a slave when young. In Sicily, he became a shepherd and began to admire the Catholic faith of his masters, eventually converting. He adhered to Catholic principles with ardent zeal, feeding the poor with his flock's milk and cheese. After his master granted him freedom, he chose to continue working for him for a few years before seeking to devote himself more rigorously to work in the hospital in Noto caring for the sick. He entered religion and became a Third Order Franciscan, giving to the poor even from the alms he received, and redoubled his work in the hospitals. He became a contemplative and spent his remaining years in prayer and meditation as a desert hermit. His patience in the face of adversity, dedication to serving the needy, and profound humility raised general admiration for this African Saint. The Jesuits spread the devotion to St. Anthony of Categeró from Italy to Brazil, where he became a symbol of comfort for the slaves brought over from Africa. Catholic Drive Time - 877-757-9424 Date – Friday, March 10th - 2023 – 40 Martyrs of Sebaste The 40 Martyrs of Sebaste were a group of Roman soldiers stationed in Sebaste who were tortured and martyred for their Catholic faith in 320 AD. After their refusal to renounce their faith, they were put in a pond of frozen water overnight, and all but one died. The mother of the surviving soldier, Melito, exhorted him to persevere to the end, and upon his death, he joined his companions in martyrdom. Their ashes were to be dispersed in the wind and their bones thrown into the river, but God conserved them so that the faithful could gather them later and keep them as precious relics. St. Basil praised the martyrs for their heroism and compared their arrival in heaven to a triumphal procession into Rome. Prof. Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira praised the mother of Melito for her selflessness and grandeur of soul in offering her son for martyrdom.
