In the end, a motion to advance C-21 to Second Reading was successful, after Speaker of the Senate, Raymonde Gagné, called for a Standing Vote. Just over two months before Liberals quietly retreated by withdrawing their extremely controversial amendments to Bill C-21, originally known as Trudeau's 'Handgun Freeze' legislation, Senator Pamela Wallin called out MP Gudie Hutchings (Newfoundland and Labrador), who promoted and supported the bill, asking why the federal government, without debate or committee hearings, moved to ban legally owned firearms. The move, Sen. Wallin said, would criminalize hunters, farmers, and rural communities, when the 'overwhelming bulk of violent gun crime is taking place in big cities. So, why target legal hunters and farmers, rather than the gangs and those that import weapons illegally?' She continued, 'And, adding insult to injury, through Bill C-5, your government has actually moved to reduce sentences for those who are convicted of a serious gun crime and violence?' C-21 was back on the agenda in the Senate yesterday as Senator Marty Klyne (Saskatchewan) stood to give a statement on the Liberals legal gun ban legislation. Mr. Klyne touched on topics supported by all parties, such as regulating the manufacturing/possession of 'ghost guns,' providing resources to secure the Canadian border, and properly consulting with indigenous communities. He also suggested the federal government properly aim their legislation at the primary sources of crime guns in Canada, specifically organized crime, gun smugglers, and gangs... not law abiding Canadians. On Friday June 1st, debate continued on C-21 in the Senate beginning with Senator Hassan Yussuff (Ontario) completing his statement. Sen. Don Plett (Manitoba) pushed back pointing out the federal governments lack of data to backup their claims as well as defending sport shooters who continue to be 'lumped in' with criminal activity. Sen. Tony Dean (Ontario) brought up the recent shooting in Hamilton where he alleged the perpetrator was a registered firearms owner, while Sen. Andrew Cardozo (Ontario) suggested gun control organizations have complained the legislation didn't go far enough. Sen. Stan Kutcher (Nova Scotia) makes his statement on the legal gun ban bill and debate is adjourned until the next session. During Third Reading of Bill C-21, Liberal MP for Yukon Territory, Brendan Hanley, very eloquently spoke on behalf of his law abiding constituents, including data published by Statistics Canada data that has been largely ignored by his own party. For example, citing the findings that in Canada, 79% of solved homicides with a firearm found that the perpetrator did not possess a firearms license. There's certainly no honour among thieves, as was the case, after NDP member Peter Julian moved Alistair MacGregor's amendment (supported by Conservatives) aimed at providing at least one avenue for Canadian athletes to continue competing in the shooting sport known as IPSC. Kody Blois, a rural Liberal MP working for the constituents of King - Hants, Nova Scotia, with his important vote, had the opportunity to save the sport. However, even after expressing concern for his party's position on the matter, decided hypocritically, to abstain from the vote altogether, deliberately crushing the community in which he claimed he supported. Kristina Michaud of the Bloc Québécois, unsurprisingly, voted against the motion. The IPSC community is made up of thousands of licensed, RCMP-vetted, law abiding gun owners, who are highly regulated, trained, and compete in Canada, and around the world. 🌎 Pam Damoff claimed the Liberal position stood primarily on the words of Ken Price, father of shooting victim Samantha Price (Danforth shooting), when he said "It's a decision about how you want to move forward as a country." She added that Mr. Price said he 'would love to have handguns banned tomorrow, but maybe we freeze them now, and it will take them out of circulation eventually.'
