A woman from Canada is facing federal charges for attempting to smuggle illegal firearms into Canada. From the story: “In a piece of luggage investigators found “dozens of black socks containing pistols.” The affidavit then says beneath the socks were several AR style and AK style rifles. In all, three rifles, 31 pistols and 121 rounds of ammunition were found. Investigators questions Williams and she told them she’s paid to fly from Canada to the US where she travels to Toledo to meet a driver. She went on to say she accompanies the driver and various bags to New York state, leaves the bags at different locations in New York and then travels back to Canada through a port of entry land border crossing. Williams told investigators she was transporting something illegal across the U.S. and that the “product” was headed to Canada. The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms tracks illegal firearms found in Canada that trace back to the U.S. In the last five years, the highest amount was 2019 when more than 7,000 guns were found. In 2019, a fearful homeowner called 911, just before 3AM, after he heard a window break and footsteps inside his home. A lawful gun owner in the state of Washington, he retrieved his phone, legal firearm, and hid in his bedroom closet anxiously waiting for police to arrive. Though he had immediately alerted the authorities, police were unable to make it to his home in the 4 mins it took for intruders to make their way from outside, to his bedroom. The confrontation was recorded in this bone-chilling 911 call. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐰𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐨𝐧? “Washington Law allows a person to use reasonable force to defend themselves when they are being attacked or have a reasonable belief that they are about to be attacked. A person may not use more force than is necessary given the situation. The law does not impose a duty to retreat. This means that if you are in your home, you do not have to try to escape the situation before defending yourself. This is otherwise called, the ‘Stand Your Ground Rule’ in Washington. Washington has a Castle Doctrine, also known as a castle law or a defense of habitation law, which is a legal doctrine that designates a person's abode or any legally occupied place (ie. vehicle or home) as a place in which that person has protections and immunities permitting them, in certain circumstances, to use force to defense against an intruder, free of legal liability. Global News Crime Specialist Catherine McDonald on the new details released surrounding the Milton Ontario self-defence case, after the Crown withdrew the second-degree murder charge laid against legal gun owner, Ali Mian.
