Who'll Stop the Rain - Creedence Clearwater Revival (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Who'll Stop the Rain (Creedence Clearwater Revival, 1970). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-03-09. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"
John Fogerty's song "Who'll Stop the Rain" was a double a-sided single with "Traveling Band," which was released in 1970 and both songs rose to the #2 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (songmeaningsandfacts.com, 2022; Whitburn, 2013). According to songmeaningsandfacts.com, the song references three distinct themes: people through the ages trying to fix issues in the world; the Cold War and the Vietnam war; the Woodstock concert. "as a commentary about the overall ineffectiveness of being able to 'stop the rain'. It was argued that 'The rain' . . . is a general symbol of persistent problems human beings face collectively" (songmeaningsandfacts.com, 2022). However, when interviewed by Rolling Stone magazine, Fogerty stated that "I was talking about Washington, when I wrote the song" (iloveclassicrock.com, 2022). As an aside, amazingly, with all the hit songs Creedence recorded, none ever reached the #1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; five releases stalled at the #2 position on the chart and two of these five were double a-sided releases; so technically they had seven #2 hits (Whitburn, 2013).

Lyrics:
As long as I remember
The rain's been comin' down
Clouds of mystery pourin'
Confusion on the ground
Good men through the ages
Tryin' to find the sun
And I wonder, still I wonder
Who'll stop the rain
I went down Virginia
Seekin' shelter from the storm
Caught up in the fable
I watched the tower grow
Five year plans and new deals
Wrapped in golden chains
And I wonder, still I wonder
Who'll stop the rain?
Heard the singers playin'
How we cheered for more
The crowd then rushed together
Tryin' to keep warm
Still the rain kept pourin'
Fallin' on my ears
And I wonder, still I wonder
Who'll stop the rain?

Dedicated Follower of Fashion - Kinks, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Dedicated Follower of Fashion (Kinks, The, 1966). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-03-07. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"
"Dedicated Follower of Fashion" is the Kinks' seventh top 40 hit in the USA landing at the #36 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1966 (Whitburn, 2013). According to songfacts.com (2022), "This Ray Davies composition can be interpreted either as a tribute to Carnaby Street and its ethos, or a gentle send-up of the contemporary British fashion scene." "The song shows mockery of the culture" (zinginstruments.com, 2022). The Kinks were one of the original British Invasion groups to hit the USA charts in 1964 with "You Really Got Me" (C. Larkin, 1997).

Lyrics:
They seek him here, they seek him there,
His clothes are loud, but never square.
It will make or break him so he's got to buy the best,
'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.
And when he does his little rounds,
'Round the boutiques of London Town,
Eagerly pursuing all the latest fads and trends,
'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.
Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is).
He thinks he is a flower to be looked at,
And when he pulls his frilly nylon panties right up tight,
He feels a dedicated follower of fashion.
Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is).
There's one thing that he loves and that is flattery.
One week he's in polka-dots, the next week he is in stripes.
'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.
They seek him here, they seek him there,
In Regent Street and Leicester Square.
Everywhere the Carnabetian army marches on,
Each one an dedicated follower of fashion.
Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is).
His world is built 'round discotheques and parties.
This pleasure-seeking individual always looks his best
'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.
Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is).
He flits from shop to shop just like a butterfly.
In matters of the cloth he is as fickle as can be,
'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.
He's a dedicated follower of fashion.
He's a dedicated follower of fashion.

Reflections of My Life - Marmalade, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Reflections of My Life (Marmalade, The, 1969-1970). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-03-05. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"
"Reflections of My Life" was Scotland's Marmalade's first entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1970, and their only release in the USA that made it into the top 40 climbing to the #10 position (Whitburn, 2013). According to co-writer, Junior Campbell, "I came up with the song quite literally the night before the very first session . . . I had the tune and the chorus lyric and so the working title was “Take Me Back” . . . Dean [Ford, aka Thomas McAleese] worked on the verse lyric whilst we recorded the track" (nimrodfree, Youtube.com, Feb 12, 2020). The song has sold more than two million copies worldwide and "the writers were awarded a Special Citation of Achievement in 1998 by BMI in attaining radio broadcast performances in excess of one million in the US alone" (carlinmusic.com, 2022). As an aside, I recorded a version of "Reflections of My Life" in 1979, and it is included on my second album, "Now . . . and Then" https://youtu.be/0-Z6oGYdpQw

Lyrics:
The changing of sunlight to moonlight
Reflections of my life
Oh, how they fill my eyes
The greetings of people in trouble
Reflections of my life
Oh, how they fill my eyes
All, my sorrows
Sad tomorrows
Take me back to my own home
All, my crying
Feel I'm dying, dying
Take me back to my own home
I'm changing, arranging
I'm changing
I'm changing everything
Everything around me
The world is
A bad place
A bad place
A terrible place to live
Oh, but I don't wanna to die
All, my sorrows
Sad tomorrows
Take me back to my own home
All, my crying
Feel I'm dying, dying
Take me back to my own home
All, my sorrows
Sad tomorrows
Take me back to my own home
All, my crying

Bye Bye Love - Everly Brothers, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Bye Bye Love (Everly Brothers, The, 1957). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-03-02. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"
"Bye Bye Love" was the Everly Brothers' first entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1957 and rose to the #2 position on the chart (Whitburn, 2013). According to B. Scott, The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll claimed that the song was initially rejected by 30 artists; however, eventually the Everly Brothers took a chance, and with the assistance of Chet Atkins on guitar, had their first hit with the song (lost45.com, Jan 5, 2014). The song was written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant; Boudleaux explained his part in writing of the song: “I wrote ‘Bye Bye Love’ while traveling home one night. Felice was driving down the highway and I got the first verse and chorus right down there. I always make sure I have a pen and paper in the car for these occasions . . . We really believed in the song and were disappointed when so many people turned it down. They said it was unsuitable" (countrythangdaily.com, 2022). In 2006, "Bye Bye Love" was presented with the Grammy Hall of Fame Award (awardsandwinners.com, 2022). The Everly Brothers, themselves, had their share of awards. They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 (rockhall.com, 2022), the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001 (countrymusichalloffame.org, 2022), and were presented with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996 (awardsandwinners.com, 2022).

Bye bye love
Bye bye happiness, hello loneliness
I think I'm-a gonna cry
Bye bye love, bye bye sweet caress, hello emptiness
I feel like I could die
Bye bye my love goodbye
There goes my baby with-a someone new
She sure looks happy, I sure am blue
She was my baby till he stepped in
Goodbye to romance that might have been
Bye bye love
Bye bye happiness, hello loneliness
I think I'm-a gonna cry
Bye bye love, bye bye sweet caress, hello emptiness
I feel like I could die
Bye bye my love goodbye
I'm-a through with romance, I'm a-through with love
I'm through with a'countin' the stars above
And here's the reason that I'm so free
My lovin' baby is through with me
Bye bye love

Lyrics:
Sunshine came softly through my a-window today
Could've tripped out easy a-but I've a-changed my ways
It'll take time, I know it but in a while
You're gonna be mine, I know it, we'll do it in style
'Cause I made my mind up you're going to be mine
I'll tell you right now
Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can find
Everybody's hustlin' just to have a little scene
When I say we'll be cool I think that you know what I mean
We stood on a beach at sunset, do you remember when?
I know a beach where, baby, a-it never ends
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine
Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm
I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
'Cause I made my mind up you're going to be mine
I'll tell you right now
Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can find
Superman or Green Lantern ain't got a-nothin' on me
I can make like a turtle and dive for your pearls in the sea, yeah
A you-you-you can just sit there a-thinking on your velvet throne
'Bout all the rainbows a-you can a-have for your own
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine
I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine
I'll pick up your hand
I'll pick up your hand

Your Wildest Dreams - Moody Blues, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Your Wildest Dreams (Moody Blues, The, 1986). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-02-27. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"
"Your Wildest Dreams" was the Moody Blues' last of six top 20 hits rising to #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1986 (Whitburn, 2013). Writer Justin Hayward stated "I thought I was writing a frivolous sort of song. I thought 'Wildest Dreams' would be a throwaway thing that people wouldn't really take much notice of lyrically. But I found out that it was a common experience and desire by a lot of people. So that was very revealing" (songfacts.com, 2022). Hayward claimed that the song was written about a specific person, but he has refused to indicate who the person is (societyofrock.com, 2022).

Lyrics:
Once upon a time
Once when you were mine
I remember skies
Reflected in your eyes
I wonder where you are
I wonder if you think about me
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams
Once the world was new
Our bodies felt the morning dew
That greets the brand new day
We couldn't tear ourselves away
I wonder if you care
I wonder if you still remember
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams
And when the music plays
And when the words are touched with sorrow
When the music plays
I hear the sound I had to follow
Once upon a time
Once beneath the stars
The universe was ours
Love was all we knew
And all I knew was you
I wonder if you know
I wonder if you think about it
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
And when the music plays
And when the words are touched with sorrow
When the music plays
And when the music plays
I hear the sound I had to follow
Once upon a time
Once upon a time
Once when you were mine
I remember skies
Mirrored in your eyes
I wonder where you are
I wonder if you think about me
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams
In your wildest dreams
In your wildest dreams

Always Look On The Bright Side of Life - Monty Python (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Always Look On The Bright Side of Life (Monty Python, 1979). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-02-12. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"
"Always Look On The Bright Side of Life" was written by Monty Python alum Eric Idle and was the finale song used at the end of the film "Life of Brian" (Wikipedia, 2022). Interesting fact: Research was conducted among United Kingdom Funeral directors and arrangers in August 2021 and found that "Always Look On The Bright Side of Life" has become the most popular movie or TV song selected to be performed at funerals in the United Kingdom (coop.co.uk, 2021). Art Garfunkel recorded the song, which is included at the end of the film "As Good As It Gets" (last.fm, 2008); he did change one phrase: "Life's a piece of shit" was changed to "Life's a counterfeit" (songlyrics.com, 2022). Although the song was released as a single in the USA (i.discogs.com, 2022), it did not chart on the Billboard charts (Whitburn, 2013); however, it did rise to #3 on the UK Singles Chart in 1991 (officialcharts.com, 2022).

Walk Away Renee - Left Banke, The / Four Tops, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Walk Away Renee (Left Banke, The, 1966; Four Tops, The, 1968). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-02-25. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"
"Walk Away Renee" was the Left Banke's debut single and highest charted song rising to the #5 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1966 (Whitburn, 2013). The Four Tops also had a hit with their version of the song in 1968 climbing to #14 on the Billboard chart. The only other artist to hit the Hot 100 was Southside Johnny & the Jukes in 1986 whose version just scratched the chart and stalled at #98 (Whitburn, 2013). In 2003, the song was ranked #222 on The Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Songs of All Time (rollingstone.com, 2003). Michael Brown, one of the writers of the song, had a crush on one of the bandmates' girlfriend, Renee Fladen, who became the focal point of the song (rollingstone.com, 2003).

Lyrics:
And when I see the sign that points one way
The lot we used to pass by every day
Just walk away Renee
You won't see me follow you back home
The empty sidewalks on my block are not the same
You're not to blame
From deep inside the tears that I'm forced to cry
From deep inside the pain that I chose to hide
Just walk away Renee
You won't see me follow you back home
Now as the rain beats down upon my weary eyes
For me it cries
Just walk away Renee
You won't see me follow you back home
Now as the rain beats down upon my weary eyes
For me it cries
Your name and mine inside a heart upon a wall
Still finds a way to haunt me, though they're so small
Just walk away Renee
You won't see me follow you back home
The empty sidewalks on my block are not the same
You're not to blame

We never talk
There was a time when there weren't enough words to say
We never touch
But I remember when I couldn't keep my hands away
The thrill is gone
There's no desire
Girl we've got to feed the fire
We've got to get it on again
Work it out together
Learn to love again
We've got to make a try
Hey Girl we've got to get it on again
Get our act together
Fall in love again
To keep our love alive
We never laugh
We used to know so many happy songs
We never kiss
In the penetrating way that used to turn me on
Once there fire in our lives
Silver sparks that used to fly
We've got to get it on again
Work it out together
Learn to love again
We've got to make a try
Hey girl we've got to get it on again
Get our act together
Fall in love again
To keep our love alive
Once there was fire in our lives
Silver sparks that used to fly

Teach Your Children - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Teach Your Children (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, 1970). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2021-01-29. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"
"Teach Your Children" was written by Graham Nash in 1968, while still with the Hollies, recorded by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in 1969, and released in 1970 (J. Bosso, guitarplayer.com, Oct 08, 2021). Although the song is found on Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's album "Déjà Vu," Neil Young did not perform on the song and Gerry Garcia and John Sebastian were brought in to play pedal steel guitar and harmonica respectively (en.wikipedia.org, 2022). The song hit the #16 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was the quartet's second top 20 hit (Whitburn, 2013). The song may have rose higher on the chart had it not been for the release of "Ohio" a couple of weeks later (songfacts.com, 2022; Whitburn, 2013), which was written by Young immediately after hearing about the Kent State shootings (L. Hutchinson, performingsongwriter.com, May 4, 2017). Radio stations were hesitant to promote two song by the same artist at the same time, so "Teach Your Children" was prematurely sidelined in favor of "Ohio" (songfacts.com, 2022).

Lyrics:
You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can live by
And so become yourself
Because the past is just a good-bye.
Teach your children well,
Their father's hell did slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks, the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you will cry,
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you.
And you, of tender years,
Can't know the fears that your elders grew by,
And so please help them with your youth,
They seek the truth before they can die.
Teach your parents well,
Their children's hell will slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks, the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you will cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

Where Or When - Dion & the Belmonts (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Where Or When (Dion & the Belmonts, 1959-1960;). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-02-02. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"
Written by Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart in 1937 for the film "Babes in Arms," "Where or When" has been recorded by well over 120 artists (Wikipedia, 2022); however, Dion & the Belmonts' recording is one of the most recognizable versions. Recorded in 1959, their version rose to the #3 position in 1960 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; this was the group's third top 20 hit and their highest charting single (Whitburn, 2013). Later that year, Dion (DiMucci) and the Belmonts went their separate recording ways (last.fm, 2016). Other charted versions include: Hal Kemp (1937 #1), Guy Lumbardo (1943 #19), and The Lettermen (1964 #98) (Whitburn, 1986; 2013). As a fateful side note, in the winter of 1959, [Dion &] the Belmonts were touring with Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson (aka The Big Bopper). On February 3, 1959 Holly, Valens, and Richardson died in a plane crash after finishing a concert and heading to a new gig in Iowa (J. Doyle, pophistorydig.com, Jan 11, 2013). Dion had a chance to join the others on the plane, but he said that he "did not take the plane because he thought the $36 price for the trip was too high" (IMDb.com, 2022; J. Doyle, pophistorydig.com, Jan 11, 2013).

It seems we stood and talked like this before
We looked at each other in the same way then
But I can't remember where or when
The clothes you're wearing are the clothes you wore
The smile you are smiling you were smiling then

Some things that happen for the first time
Seem to be happening again
And so it seems that we have met before
And laughed before
And loved before

Isn't It A Pity - George Harrison (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Isn't It A Pity (George Harrison, 1970-1971) Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-02-22. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"
"Isn't It A Pity" by George Harrison was his very first solo release off his debut album "All Things Must Pass" as a double a-sided single with "My Sweet Lord;" both hit the #1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1970 (Whitburn, 2013). Harrison had proposed the use of the song with the Beatles during a number of recording sessions but was turned down each time by the group (beatlesbible.com, 2020). Two versions of the song were recorded; version one, as performed here (shortened from the 7:10 length of the song) (allmusic.com, 2022), was the version used for the single release and had multiple known artists assisting Harrison: Badfinger members, Pete Ham, Tom Evans, Joey Molland (acoustic guitars) & Mike Gibbins (tambourine); Klaus Voorman (bass); Tony Ashton (piano); Billy Preston and Gary Wright (keyboards); Ringo Starr (drums); Harrison (all vocals & slide guitar) (beatlesbible.com, 2020).

Now, isn't it a shame
How we break each other's hearts
And cause each other pain
How we take each other's love

Some things take so long
But how do I explain
When not too many people
Can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears
Their eyes can't hope to see
The beauty that surrounds them
Isn't it a pity
Isn't it a pity
Isn't is a shame

"Coming Into Los Angeles" is a song written and recorded by Arlo Guthrie in 1969 and is found on his "Running Down the Road" album (Whitburn, 2006); it is also the "B" side of Arlo's "Alice's Rock & Roll Restaurant" edited single (rateyourmusic.com, 2022). Although "Comin' Into Los Angeles" never made it onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart, it is mostly remembered from Guthrie's performance of the song at the Woodstock Music and Art Fair in 1969, and it's subsequent inclusion in the film "Woodstock" (1970) (allmusic.com, 2022). Indeed, the song did not get much radio air play because of the topic, smuggling of drugs on an airplane (A. Edelstein, rutlandherald.com, Oct 6, 2018). Arlo is the son of folk singer Woody Guthrie (imdb.com, 2022).

Lyrics:
Kind of a drag
When your baby don't love you
Kind of a drag
When you know she's been untrue
Oh oh, listen to what I've gotta to say
Girl, I still love you
I'll always love you
Anyway, anyway, anyway
Kind of a drag
When your baby says goodbye
Kind of a drag
When you feel like you want to cry
Oh oh girl, even though you make me feel blue
I still love you
I'll always love you
Anyway, anyway, anyway
Oh, listen to what I've gotta say
Girl, I still love you
I'll always love you
Anyway, anyway, anyway

Blowin' In the Wind - Bob Dylan / Peter, Paul & Mary (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Blowin' In the Wind (Bob Dylan, 1963; Peter, Paul & Mary, 1963; Stevie Wonder, 1966). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2021-01-20. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"
"Blowin' In the Wind," a song written by Bob Dylan, was a major hit for Peter, Paul & Mary in 1963 rising to the #2 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart followed by Stevie Wonder's version, which rose to #9 in 1966 on the same chart (Whitburn, 2013). "The song was inspired by the autobiography titled 'Bound for Glory' by Woody Guthrie who was famous for his intense political statements that he often described as the wind blowing into the streets of New York and newspapers from newsstands blowing all over the place" (gradesaver.com, 2022), additionally, the song was based on the 19th century ex-slave song ‘No More Auction Block’ (T. Attwood, bob-dylan.org.uk, Nov 3, 2008). Dylan claimed that he wrote the song in 10 minutes (history.com, 2020). Peter, Paul & Mary's rendition of the song introduced the world to Bob Dylan's music, who was not yet well known in 1963 (songfacts.com, 2022). In 2011, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the song #14 on its list of "Greatest Song of All Time" and in 1994, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame (A. London, songmeaningsandfacts.com, Jul 23, 2020).

Lyrics:
How many roads must a man walk down
Before they can call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
How many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind
How many years can a mountain exist
Before it is washed to the sea?
How many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
How many times can a man turn his head
And pretend that he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind
How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
How many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
How many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind

I Started A Joke - Bee Gees, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
I Started A Joke (Bee Gees, The, 1968-1969). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-02-18. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"
"I Started A Joke" was the Bee Gee's 7th top 20 hit in the USA landing at the #6 position (the highest position at this point in their career) on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1968 (Whitburn, 2013). The song was written by the three Gibb brothers, Barry, Robin & Maurice, although Robin was the primary composer (beegees.fandom.com, 2022). Robin Gibb explained (beegees.com, 2022; Bee Gees Anthology, Hal Leonard [publisher], 1991) that the melody for the song came to him while being hypnotized by the rhythmic sound of the airplane engines on a British Airways Vickers Viscount 4-prop. He said that "The droning, after a while, appeared to take the form of a tune, which mysteriously sounded like a church choir" (p. 188) He continued that when the plane landed, he and brother Barry finished the lyrics in their hotel room. Of the lyrics, Robin once said that "This is a very spiritual song. The listeners have to interpret it themselves – trying to explain it would detract from the song" (Mail On Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009).

Lyrics:
I started a joke which started the whole world crying
But I didn't see that the joke was on me oh no
I started to cry which started the whole world laughing
Oh If I'd only seen that the joke was on me
I looked at the skies running my hands over my eyes
And I fell out of bed hurting my head from things that I said
'Till I finally died which started the whole world living
Oh if I'd only seen that the joke was on me
I looked at the skies running my hands over my eyes
And I fell out of bed hurting my head from things that I said
'Till I finally died which started the whole world living

Oh no that the joke was on me

From Me To You - Beatles, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
From Me To You (Beatles, The, 1963/1964). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-02-14. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"
"From Me To You," written by Lennon & McCartney (songmeanings.com, 2022), was the Beatles' first 45 single released in the United States as the "B" side of "Please, Please Me," which was the "A" side of the record (beatlesbible.com, 2021; songfacts.com, 2022). "Please, Please Me" was the first song to be promoted in the US, but it did not originally chart in 1963; however, "From Me To You" was then pushed, and it hit the Billboard Bubbling Under chart at #116. The song was then re-released in 1964 when it rose to the #41 position on the chart (Whitburn, 2013); it did reach the #1 position on the UK charts (songfacts.com, 2022). "This was the first song to feature The Beatles['] falsetto "whoooo," which became a big part of many of their hits . . . Paul McCartney learned the "whoooo" from listening to Little Richard" (songfacts.com, 2022). According to beatlesebooks.com (2022), Lennon and McCartney wrote the song while on a bus from York to Shrewsury, England. They were reading a column in New Musical Express, "From You To Us," which featured a fan letter talking about how Cliff Richard was currently outshining Elvis Presley in the charts. They used the title of the column as the spark that led to "From Me To You."

Lyrics:
It's cold here in the city
It always seems that way
And I've been thinking about you almost everyday
Thinking about the good times
Thinking about the rain
Thinking about how bad it feels alone again
I'm sorry for the way things are in China
I'm sorry things ain't what they used to be
But more than anything else
I'm sorry for myself
'Cause you're not here with me
Our friends all ask about you
And I say you're doing fine
And I expect to hear from you almost anytime
But they all know I'm crying
And I can't sleep at night
They all know I'm dying down deep inside
I'm sorry for all the lies I told you
I'm sorry for the things I didn't say
But more than anything else
I'm sorry for myself
I can't believe you went away
I'm sorry if I took some things for granted
I'm sorry for the chains I put on you
But more than anything else
I'm sorry for myself
For living without you

I find complete love
Without your sweet love
what would life be?
So never leave me lonely

Where Were You When I Needed You - Grass Roots, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Where Were You When I Needed You (Grass Roots, The, 1966). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2021-01-24. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"
"Where Were You When I Needed You" was the Grass Roots' first top 40 hit rising to #28 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1966 (Whitburn, 2013). The song was written by the songwriting duo P. F. Sloan and Steve Barri (R. Unterberger, allmusic.com, 2022). The two decided to record some demo recordings of their music and eventually decided to be artists as well and called them selves the Grass Roots (as in the grass roots project) and recruited the San Francisco band the Bedouin to complete the band; their lead singer, Bill Fulton, sang lead for the song; be that as it may, the members of the Bedouin did not work out, so Sloan & Barri completed the rest of the songs for the first album themselves (songfacts.com, 2022).

Don't bother crying, don't bother calling
It's all over now, no use in stalling
The love once I felt
I don't feel anymore for you
This time I'll even open the door for you
You walked out when I was down
Well, now I'm well off
And look, look who's coming 'round
Where were you when I needed ya
Where were you when I wanted ya
Where were you when I needed ya
Where?
You're looking good
It's hard to fight it
There's no use explaining
I've already decided
That living with you
Is worse than without you
I won't spend a lifetime a-worriying about you
Things get rough and you disappeared
Now I'm back on my feet
And look, look who is standing there
Where were you when I needed ya
Where were you when I wanted ya
Where were you when I needed ya
Where?
You were so young and you were so wild
I knew you were nobody's innocent child
The first day I saw you
You really got to me
I thought I could change you
What good did it to me?
Things got rough and you couldn't wait
Now you're tripping back
But babe, babe it's too late
Where were you when I needed ya
Where were you when I wanted ya
Where were you when I needed ya
Where?

Take It To The Limit - Eagles, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Take It To The Limit (Eagles, The, 1975). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2021-01-18. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"
"Take It To The Limit" was the Eagles 5th top 10 hit climbing to #4 in 1975 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (Whitburn, 2013). The song was written by Don Henley, Randy Meisner and Glenn Frey and sung by Meisner; according to Meisner, "The line 'take it to the limit' was to keep trying. You reach a point in your life where you feel you've done everything and seen everything - it's part of getting old. And just to take it to the limit one more time, like every day just keep punching away at it" (songfacts.com, 2022). Meisner left the band in 1977; he claimed he was extremely nervous about singing the song in concert, especially the high note at the end; band members insisted that he sing it which led to a fight and his decision to quit after the tour (A. Matyus, grunge.com, Aug 7, 2020). He was replaced by bassist Timothy B. Schmit of Poco fame (songfacts.com, 2022).

Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is - Chicago (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is (Chicago, 1970). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-01-16. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"
"Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is" was Chicago's 4th entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart; the song reached the #7 position on the chart in 1970 (Whitburn, 2013). According to writer of the song Robert Lamb, "I was a teenager walking down the street in Brooklyn, New York where I grew up. I walked by a movie theater and there was an usher standing outside taking a cigarette break. I said to him, 'Hey man, what time is it?' and he said, 'Does anybody really know what time it is?' I remembered that when I was trying to write this sort of Beatle-esque shuffle and just explore the idea of 'Does anybody really know what time it is?'" (The Chris Isaak Hour, songfacts.com, 2022). This was the first song that Chicago recorded in the studio together (songfacts.com, 2022). The song is found on their first album when the band was called "Chicago Transit Authority" (chicagotheband.com, 2021); however, the the city of Chicago's "Chicago Transit Authority" objected to them using the agency's name, so the group shortened their name to "Chicago" (W. Ruhlmann, allmusic.com, 2022) to avoid possible legal actions (W. J. Wright, grunge.com, Mar 22, 2021).

King of the Road - Roger Miller (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
King of the Road (Roger Miller, 1965). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-01-12. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"
"King of the Road" was Roger Miller's third top 10 Billboard Hot 100 song landing at the #4 position in 1965 (Whitburn, 2013) and hitting the #1 position on the Billboard Top Country Singles' chart (Whitburn, 1994). "During the summer, [Miller] was on the road outside of Chicago when he saw a sign that read ‘Trailers for Sale or Rent’. He began writing the first draft to “King of the Road”, though he got no further than the first verse. In Boise, Idaho, Roger noticed a hobo statue in an airport gift shop and bought it in hopes of finding inspiration for the rest of the lyrics;" the song took him six weeks to complete writing (rogermiller.com, 2022). Conversely, in 1969 on the Mike Douglas Show, Miller stated "I was doing a show in a place you have probably never heard of called Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, and I saw a statue of a hobo in a cigar shop were I was staying. I purchased it and took it to my room and wrote the song" (songfacts.com, 2022). Be that as it may, at the 8th Annual Grammy Awards in 1965, Miller and his song walked away with the most awards: Best Country & Western Song award (Artist), Best Male Country Vocal Performance, Best Contemporary Song, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, Best Country Song (Writer), Best Contemporary (R&R) Performance (Single), Best Contemporary (R&R) Performance (Male Vocal Performance) (awardsandwinners.com, 2022).

Trailer for sale or rent, rooms to let, fifty cents
No phone, no pool, no pets, I ain't got no cigarettes
Ah, but, two hours of pushin' brooms
Buys an eight by twelve four-bit room
I'm a man of means by no means, king of the road
Third boxcar, midnight train, destination, Bangor, Maine
Old worn-out suits and shoes
I don't pay no union dues
I smoke old stogies I have found - short, but not too big around
I'm a man of means by no means, king of the road
Every engineer on every train
All of their children, and all of their names
And every handout in every town
And every lock that ain't locked when no one's around
Trailers for sale or rent, rooms to let, fifty cents
No phone, no pool, no pets, I ain't got no cigarettes
Ah, but, two hours of pushin' brooms
Buys an eight by twelve four-bit room
I'm a man of means by no means, king of the road
Trailers for sale or rent, rooms to let, fifty cents
No phone, no pool, no pets, I ain't got no cigarettes
Ah, but, two hours of pushin' brooms
Buys an eight by twelve four-bit room
I'm a man of means by no means, king of the road
