Machine and Hand Knitting

There are many ways to join two pieces of knitting together. In this video, I show how two of them look on a couple of finished projects. The two methods are Mattress Stitch and Bickfork Stitch.

This is a method to join two pieces of knitted material on their open stitches. Also known as the Kitchener Stitch. K ! P (slip) P ! K (slip) At start: P then K with no slip At end: K then P

This is demo of how to cast-on a double bed knitting machine using the e-wrap method. It gives a nicer looking starting edge.

This video shows an alternative to the Mattress stitch for joining knitted material. Unlike the Mattress stitch, the Bickford stitch does not leave a lump on the back side of the joined pieces. Both the front and back are perfectly flat. However, the front side is not as perfect a join as the Mattress stitch. This method of seaming is suited for seaming socks, baby hats and anything else that may rub against the skin.
