Mark's conversation tonight is with Morgan & Alex Mitchell, owners of ARK Seed Kits. They started ARK 15 years ago from their little 12x12ft garden downtown Traverse City, MI. Growing gardens has always been a main staple over many generations in their families which provided them with basic skills on how to grow their own vegetables. But 15 years ago, they decided to venture into growing only heirloom seeds, to provide higher quality tasting produce. From their first heirloom produce harvest, they learned how to save the seeds from multiple different varieties of plants. That was the start of their seed saving venture. From that first harvest, they had multiple requests from friends and family for a share of their seed harvest. In the following year, their seed harvest grew as well as the demand for sharing their seed stock. That is where ARK (Agricultural Resource Kit) started. Teresa is a northern Michigan native that spent about 15 years in Florida and returned home in 2018. Teresa struggled with her health most of her life but became very ill after the birth of her youngest child. After years of being shuffled through the medical system, she was finally diagnosed with lupus. Further health decline and a lot of frustration with Western Medicine followed her diagnosis, until she embarked on a journey to wellness through alternative medicine & natural healing. Food was an important part of that journey and that's where she discovered the world of microgreens. In 2021, she decided to share her passion with our community and open the farm. Her daughter, Elise (El), has had an affinity for animals her entire life and her son, Tyler (Ty), was the one that inspired her passion for herbs, hence Elty Farms was born. Haven works fulltime on his family's conventional dairy farm located in Lucas Michigan, where 1,800 Holsteins are milked three times daily. In 2020, Haven and his siblings began raising and processing pastured poultry as a regenerative farming side venture, raising 900 broilers in their first year, then adding egg layers in an eggmobile in 2021 Haven also has a YouTube channel where he makes videos about farming and art, as he enjoys drawing in his spare time.
