Kourtney Houk joins Mark on the show tonight. She serves as a Food Business Manager with the U.S. Compassion in World Farming team, working closely with major food businesses to adopt and build upon commitments for animal welfare. She is passionate about transforming food systems and partnering with companies to drive systemic change toward regenerative agriculture and more sustainable farming practices.
Kourtney holds a Master’s in Higher Education Administration and a Bachelor’s in Hospitality Business from Central Michigan University. She lives in northern Michigan and enjoys spending time on her growing homestead gardening, baking, and raising chickens.

Working black magic on the homestead with biochar: interview with Bruce DeVries
Bruce has been a farmer since the beginning, growing up on a dairy farm and Colorado ranches. He’s also farmed through the years in East and West Texas and Tennessee. Along the way he picked up a Theology degree and a graduate degree in Education Administration, and his wife of 43 years, Darla. They have two daughters who are married, have children, and live on commercial cattle operations. He presently manages 140 acres doing hay, horses, a leather shop, and manufacturing small biochar kilns and retorts and doing education to promote biochar.

Nick Ferguson is an Ecosystems Engineering consultant who works in the USA and internationally. He specializes in homestead and farm design, helping clients create resilient, ecologically sound, and sustainable farms.
Nick has spent his whole life studying ecology from a homeschooled start, to attending college at 16 years old. He’s gone on to manage large-scale design installations. And taught alongside greats such as Joel Salatin, Mark Shepherd, and Geoff Lawton. He currently homesteads and runs a small tree nursery in Louisiana between consulting tours.

Big things on small acreage: a homestead conversation

We grow and make value added products including maple syrup, hot sauce, and canned pantry staples for market. Homeschool dad of 2 and has a lawn care business with his youngest son cash.
