Increasing interest rates will have widespread effects in the Fixed Annuity world. The obvious: Higher accumulation rates are just better in general for business. As a broader client base becomes available, there will be a natural increase in interest in fixed annuities. Fixed Annuities will continue to attract the most risk-averse investors, but we will also see interest from those willing to take a chance for a few extra percentage points of yield. Furthermore, existing clients will be easier to retain at the conclusion of the term because the agent will be able to give them even better rates than the first sale. This results in a happier client. Less known: Shorter term or no surrender product can be reintroduced or created. Agent commissions can and have increased. More client friendly features will be available at the most competitive rates. Immediate Annuity internal rate of return (IRR) will increase. A common mistake when calculating interest earnings is to use a simple interest calculation when the interest actually is compounding. Simple interest states 4% x 5 = 20%. However, compounding is actually more complicated than this. Compounding equation would look more like this: 4.00% x 1 = 4.00% 4.04% x 1 = 4.04% 4.16% x 1 = 4.16% 4.32% X 1 = 4.32% 4.49% x 1 = 4.49% 4.67% x 1 = 4.67% So... 0.04 + 0.16 + 0.32 + 0.49 + 0.67 = 1.68% 1.68% + 20% = 21.68% Earning interest on the interest is compounding! Fees In Fixed Annuities. During the majority of my career fixed annuity I was able to say, there are no fees in fixed annuities. Specifically fees that could reduce an accumulation value. This is not true anymore. Carriers are now actively building fixed annuities with all sort of area additional fees can be added or are required. My take & opinion on charging a fee for increased index cap rates and when fee based riders can really make sense. Why is a fee being paid? What is the likelihood the benefit provided by the fee be used? Is a non-fee option available?

In this video I look at the Partial 1035 exchange rules and how they have changed since inception. The newer 2011 guidance by the IRS seems to indicate a partial exchange into an immediate annuity for at least a 10 year term certain or a life contingent based income will NOT cause the aggregation of the cost basis. In this $509,000 sample Combo/Spit annuity 30% is allocated to the Single Premium Immediate Annuity (SPIA) and 70% into the Multi-Year Guarantee Annuity (MYGA). The cost basis is split as well with 30% going to SPIA and 70% to MYGA Using a Split Annuity the income side offers $1,446 monthly of which 47% is tax excluded. If $767 is taxable at 25% bracket the after tax income is about $1,254 Simply stripping the interest with an interest rate of 3.55% will give about $1482 monthly.
