The Winter Campout Meetup in the Boundary Waters in Minnesota is back. This year, I'm joined by Midwest Backpacker, Miyagi on the Trail, Toots the Birch Lord, and Milosh for some wacky winter fun. On this winter (February) trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, we hot tent right on top of a frozen lake, hammock camp, hike to Eagle Mountain, the highest point in the state of Minnesota for a beautiful sunset, I do my first polar plunge ever, and more. 4 Days Backpacking in the Colorado Wilderness... The Lost Creek Wilderness to be exact. Each section is completely different from the next. This is a must-do backpacking loop like nothing I've done before in Colorado. The final day of our backpacking adventure begins with the overnight rain storm moving off and us waking up in a fog bank. We enjoyed our quick breakfast before packing up camp and heading out. We only had about 4 miles up the Wigwam Trail to reach the parking lot at the Lost Park Campground. It was a beautiful hike through a few grassy creek valleys. About halfway along the trip, we encountered two large bull moose grazing in one of the valleys. It was such a perfect ending to a spectacular trip in the Lost Creek Wilderness. We completed about 4 miles with almost 400 ft in vertical climb back to the cars.. This video is of my July summit of Grays Peak in Colorado. Gray's Peak was the second Colorado 14er that I've completed so far (I summited Mt Elbert a few years back). Gray's Peak is rated as one of the easier 14ers in Colorado. Many also hike across the saddle to Torreys Peak to complete 2 14,000-foot peaks in one day. I did this with my son and his scout troop as part of our high adventure trip in the summer of 2023. Backpacking the Great Smoky Mountains National Park - Twenty Mile Trail Loop In this episode, I cover day two of my backcountry camping adventure in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This episode is the third and final part of our 2022 trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota in July. We took a 7-day, 6-night canoe camping trip through the heart of the BWCAW. Join us as we canoe, portage, camp, fish, and just enjoy the beauty of the BWCA. On Day 6, we started the morning on Jack Lake and traveled to Kelly Lake, Burnt Lake, and finished on Smoke Lake. On this episode of The Cottage Corner, we are joined by Dan Durston of Durston Gear to learn a bit more about him, the company he has built, and some of the great gear that we have come to love. Join in and ask your questions. We discussed some of his experiences thru-hiking the PCT and his yo-yo of the Continental Divide Trail, how he comes up with some of his design ideas, how the X-mid idea came to be, how he was able to get that design into production, how he has dealt with the growing demand as well as all of the supply chain challenges, his new projects including the new Kakwa 55, his new idea for a free-standing tent, and his interest in getting into sleeping pads, and at the end, he graciously answers a few questions from the audience. Dan is continually pushing the limits of outdoor adventure. His travels include hiking the 2600 mile Pacific Crest Trail (2014) and the first yo-yo of Canada’s Great Divide Trail (1100km x 2, 2017) along with his wife T, who also helps with Durston gear. Dan also held the Fastest Known Time on the 90 km Stein Traverse (19 hours) and is the 5x fastest finisher in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Open (~100-mile off-season traverse of the Montana Rockies). Prior to starting his own company, he worked as a gear tester and ambassador for several other gear brands, reviewed gear for Backpackinglight.com, and established remote off-trail hiking/scrambling routes. With Durston gear, Dan combines his comprehensive technical knowledge with extensive field experience to design the highest performance ultralight equipment. His designs achieve this through extensive thought about how to solve real-world problems using a first principles design philosophy.
