The Wealth and Poverty of Self-Sufficiency in Matthew 19:16-26
When Yeshua told the rich young man that he needed to sell all his possessions and give them to the poor, he was actually telling him that he needed to stop relying on himself for his own salvation. If this had been a desert-dwelling ascetic, Yeshua might have told him to start a business and earn a lot of money in order to be saved. Wealth, poverty, obedience, traditions, and even self-reliance can be good things in the proper context, but if you are relying on any of them to earn you a place in the Kingdom of Heaven, you will be terribly disappointed when the gates are locked to you. Whatever it is that you feel makes you "good enough" is the one thing that you need to give up.

Proverbs 5:5-6 and the Forbidden Teacher
Her feet go down to death; her steps follow the path to Sheol; she does not ponder the path of life; her ways wander, and she does not know it.
Proverbs 5:5-6
In context, this passage is talking about an adulterous woman, but the principle applies more broadly. Many people whose feet are leading them down a destructive path believe that they are doing right. The problem is that they are trusting in their own innate sense of right and wrong, when the advice of our own hearts is always be tainted by an evil inclination. We need an external, objective standard to keep our consciences in line.

Prize Her Highly, and She Will Exalt You
Solomon personified wisdom as a woman in the Book of Proverbs, and much of what he said about the benefits of wisdom correlate very closely with the benefits of choosing a good wife.
Prize her highly, and she will exalt you; she will honor you if you embrace her. She will place on your head a graceful garland; she will bestow on you a beautiful crown.

Marriage and Divorce in Matthew 19:3-9
The Pharisees wanted to know where Yeshua stood on divorce, whether he would side with Hillel who said a man could divorce his wife for any cause or with Shammai who said divorce was only allowed for serious offenses. Yeshua's views were frequently closer to Hillel's but, in this case, he was firmly on Hillel's side. God's Law as given through Moses explicitly allows divorce for sexual immorality, but that right shouldn't be exercised until all other options have been exhausted. God hates divorce, just like he hates death, but both are still necessary in extreme cases. Yeshua's main point was this: God instituted marriage. Don't treat it casually. If you love God, then you will protect and cultivate your marriage.

Fathers above and below in Proverbs 3:1-12
A set of three parallelisms in Proverbs 3:1-12 are arranged in a chiasm that compares the relationship of sons to their earthly fathers to our relationship with our Heavenly Father.

The Fear of Our Fathers
The fear of Adonai is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
Proverbs 1:7
When you understand the fearful love of a small child for his father, you will begin to understand the fear of YHWH. Earthly fathers set the stage for our relationship with the Heavenly Father. If we have a loving, wise father on earth, then it is so much easier to have a healthy relationship with God.

Matthew 18:15-20 - If a Brother Sins Against You
Matthew 18:15-20, the famous passage in which Jesus says to go to a brother in private and then with two or three others before bringing an offense before the whole church, is about restitution and restoration in interpersonal offenses. It's not about exposing private sins or false doctrines, even though the same principle might apply sometimes in those situations. This process only works if you, the other person, and the whole congregation have been taught sound doctrine founded in God's Law. Without that, then it's meaningless.

Jesus and the Temple Tax in Matthew 17:24-27
Jesus and the Temple Tax in Matthew 17:24-27
When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax went up to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay the tax?” He said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tax? From their sons or from others?” And when he said, “From others,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free. However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for me and for yourself.”
Matthew 17:24-27
The temple tax being collected in Matthew 17:24-27 was not part of God's Law, although it was loosely based on the census of Exodus 30:11-16. It was a man-made tradition instituted for the financial support of the Temple. There's nothing wrong it so long as nobody claimed it was a requirement of Torah, but Yeshua used the tax to illustrate a couple of truths about our relationship to him, to the Father, and to the world. As children of the King of Kings, we are not under the authority of any Law, yet out of love for him and his kingdom, we willingly subject ourselves to his commandments and even to those man-made traditions that aren't sinful.

Thematic Connections of Jesus Transfiguration in Matthew 17:1-9
The story of Yeshua's transfiguration on Mount Tabor is one of the most profoundly strange and significant stories in the Gospel (other than the crucifixion and resurrection, of course). It is very closely connected to two other Bible stories: the wedding at Cana in John 2 and Moses on Mount Sinai in Exodus 24. The numerous parallels between these three stories reveals profound truths about Yeshua's identity and authority.

Introducing the Common Sense Bible Study Community
I created the Common Sense Bible Study community to help believers in Jesus from all different backgrounds who want to study the Bible and learn to keep God's commandments cut through the fog of sensationalism and
If you're like me, there was a point in time when you looked at what your church was teaching and asked "Where is that in the Bible?" The Bible says to do this, so why don't we do this? The Bible says not to do that, so why do we do that?
There is so much confusion and abuse and bitterness that it becomes hard to focus on what's really important. What did Yeshua of Nazareth do and how can I do the same?
You don't need a PhD in Biblical studies to understand the Bible. You need a humble heart, willing to test every doctrine against Scripture and to admit when you've been wrong. You need to be suspicious of sensationalism. And you need to focus on Yeshua, how did he keep the commandments.
At Common Sense Bible Study I want to help you cut through the theological fog and learn to study the Bible and keep God's commandments for yourself.
Join the Common Sense Bible Study community at https://commonsensebiblestudy.com and we'll explore the Scriptures together.

What are the Keys to the Kingdom in Matthew 16?
Matthew 16:13-20 is chock full of controversial bits. Son of Man, Peter the Rock, Gates of Hell, keys to the kingdom, binding and loosing, etc. Did Jesus declare Peter to be the first pope? Or is there more to it? There is so much here to misunderstand if you don't approach the passage thoughtfully.

Signs Pointing to God, Matthew 16:1-12
And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed.
Matthew 16:1-4
Yeshua didn't do miracles to entertain anyone. Everything he did was intended to teach us about God and his plan of redemption. The world is full of signs pointing to God if you're willing to see them. Some people just refuse to open their eyes.

Shavuot 2022 - Israel Takes the Hard Road
The many parallels between the stories of Abraham and Ruth illustrate a truth that is consistent throughout Scripture: God's people, whether native or grafted in, will face trials. Faithfulness to God frequently requires choosing to be insecure today for the sake of the ultimate security of God's sure promises. The easy path is usually the wrong one.

Matthew 15:1-20 and What Defiles a Person?
Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled? But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.
Matthew 15:17-20
This passage is often interpreted to mean that the rules concerning clean and unclean animals are no longer relevant, that we can now eat whatever we want without sin (violation of God's instructions). He condemned the Pharisees for making up new rules and teaching people to break God's direct commandments, so does it really make sense for him to turn around and immediately make up a new rule of his own and teach people to break God's direct commandments?

The Gospel in the Feeding of the Five Thousand (Matthew 14:13-21)
The Gospel message is hidden in many Bible stories that appear to be unrelated, including the feeding of the five thousand. It's no wonder that this story appears in all four of the Gospel narratives! Matthew 14, Mark 6, Luke 9, and John 6.
5 barley loaves.
2 fishes.
12 baskets of leftover bread.
5000 men, plus women and children.
It all means something, and it's all important.

Four Lessons from Herod and Herodias in Matthew 14:1-12
Herod had taken his brother's wife, Herodias, contrary to God's commandments in Leviticus 18:16 and 20:21. John the Baptist called him out for it, so Herod put him in prison. Herodias then got her daughter to ask Herod to behead John. There are four lessons I'd like to draw from this story:
1. God cares about who you sleep with. There are no victimless crimes in God's Law. See Leviticus 18:16 and 20:21.
2. God's commandments are his standard of behavior for all people, Jew and Gentile. Every single commandment is about love and justice for God and other people and there is no love or justice that is contrary to God's Law.
3. Wicked people will hate you for telling the truth and could try to do you harm. They will even kill you if they can.
4. Wicked people have no real boundaries. They will deny all wrongdoing and harm anyone to hold onto their sin. They will even use children in the most despicable manner. Everyone sins. The difference between the righteous and the wicked is that the righteous are ashamed of their sins.

Parable of the Householder's Treasure in Matthew 13:51-52
Parable of the Householder's Treasure in Matthew 13:51-52
“Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”
Matthew 13:51-52
Yeshua taught his disciples that teachers in the Kingdom of God should be disciples first and then scholars who taught doctrine founded on the Old Testament scriptures, but not afraid of new ideas and new expressions of old ideas.

Tares in the Kingdom of Heaven, Matthew 13:24-30
He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’ He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, “Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.”’”
Matthew 13:24-30
Three important points to get from this parable:
1. The Kingdom of Heaven is not Heaven. The Kingdom of Heaven consists of all those people who have sworn allegiance to Israel's King.
2. The master's men were sleeping when they should have been guarding the fields.
3. The Kingdom of Heaven includes both wheat and tares. The master's men are to do what they can to protect their fields, but some weeds are inevitable and even part of God's plan. God has reasons for allowing false teachers to infiltrate his people, and he'll sort it all out in the end.

What Is Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit?
Therefore I tell you...
-A- every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people,
---B- but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
-A- And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven
---B- but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
Matthew 12:31-32 ESV
If there's a sin that can never be forgiven, you need to know what it is so that you can avoid it! Fortunately, Matthew 12:31-32 contains a parallelism that defines that sin, and it is a really big deal. If you have already begun to slip into this sin, you need to get on your knees and into the Word ASAP!

What Needs to Be Removed Prior to Passover and Unleavened Bread?
Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall remove leaven out of your houses, for if anyone eats what is leavened, from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel.
Exodus 12:15
There are two Hebrew words in this verse that define what you need to remove from your home for Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread: chometz and seor. Chometz is leavened bread. Seor is leaven, specifically the yeast starter used to leaven bread dough before cooking. Leavening, in this context, refers to the fermentation process of live yeast in bread dough. Some people remove all leavening agents (yeast and chemical) and their by-products from their home, while others remove only yeast-leavened bread and any starter dough. My personal interpretation is somewhere in the middle: I remove all non-distilled, yeast-fermented grain products. If you're going to keep the Feast, then you need to read the Scriptures for yourself and make your own decisions.

The Rules of Sabbath in Matthew 12:1-14
The Saducees ruled at the Temple, but the Pharisees had the most influence over the common people. One of the ways they maintained this influence was by making the rules so complicated, people needed the Pharisees to explain it all. This was especially true regarding the weekly Sabbath. Yeshua threatened their source of power by explaining God's Law, the Torah, in the simple terms of principles rather than in long lists of do's and dont's.
Just remember this. If you find yourself worrying about exactly where the limit is between "allowed" and "forbidden", then you're missing the point of Shabbat. It's a friendlier KYSS principle: Keep Your Sabbath Simple.
