The V&A Waterfront’s Cape Wheel is reopening after a seven-month break to relocate it to a new location set to give passengers memorable new views of the city and Granger Bay, from stunning sunrises to sunsets and night-time and more. Easily one of the Waterfront’s most recognisable attractions, the Cape Wheel, which came into operation in 2008, has delighted international and local visitors, young and old alike, at its previous location between the Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre and the Union Castle Square in front of the kid’s playground and food court. Now located at the V&A’s Breakwater Boulevard overlooking the waters of Granger Bay, the wheel transforms Breakwater Boulevard into a new visitor attraction, with special elevated views across Granger Bay on one side, Robben Island in the distance, views of Table Mountain on the other end, as well as sights of Signal Hill and the Cape Town Stadium. Riders will, from 40m up, have below them the sight of commercial shipping traffic with giant container ships coming and going, large cruise and charter boats heading in and out of the harbour, kayakers accompanied by schools of dolphins as well as the possibility of spotting the occasional whales that visit the bay from time to time.

AYO puts up strong defence against PIC in Cape High Court

Pretoria - A sole African Transformation Movement councillor, Mncedi Ndzwanana, is the new Speaker of council in the City of Tshwane. Ndzwanana won by 105 votes during a secret ballot election on Monday night after he received the majority of the votes from the EFF and ANC. He contested for the position against ActionSA’s Kholofelo Morodi, who only got 37 votes. ActionSA councillor Morodi was fielded as candidate for the Speaker’s position by the multiparty coalition block, which include the DA, her party, FF+, ACDP, and IFP. All in all 211 councillors cast their ballots and at least 69 votes belonging to the DA were spoiled. DA caucus leader Cilliers Brink expressed disappointment after the Independent Electoral Commission of SA (IEC), which oversaw the voting process, discarded the party’s votes “as a result of the mark that was not of a secrecy ballot”. Asked how the DA councillors voted, Brink told journalists that “we made a marking of our own” on the ballot papers when voting. “So, once this stuff is reviewed you will clearly see where the marking is, next to the candidate of ActionSA. It was for transparency purposes,” he said.

13 March 2023. The SANDF has confirmed that it has been deployed to assist in hospitals due to the strike action by workers affiliated with the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu). In a brief statement, SANDF spokesperson Brigadier General Andries Mokoena Mahapa said the SANDF has deployed military health-care practitioners from the South African Military Health Services following a request for assistance by the Department of Health (DOH) due to the strike action by workers affiliated with Nehawu across the country.

Struggle veteran Peter Jones, who was the last person to see Steve Biko alive when they were arrested by apartheid police, died after suffering a stroke. Jones had been involved in the Struggle in the 1970s and was part of the generation of leaders that fought against apartheid. Biko and Jones were leaders of the Black People’s Convention and were arrested at a roadblock on their way to Cape Town in 1977. That was the last time that Jones saw his comrade alive and Biko would later die in prison. The two men had been on a mission to unite liberation movements at the time. The reason for this public display of skin is to make a stand against the burning of fossil fuels, which is contributing to climate change and ecological disasters. The signs of which are becoming more evident every day. Participants rode as a collective to call for South Africa to embark on a just energy transition and switch from coal-fired power to renewable energy, which is the cheapest form of energy available. Species extinction, ecosystem collapse, water scarcity, and food insecurity. The devastating impact of our addiction to fossil fuels is undeniable. Climate change quite simply is the biggest threat that the human species and our planet has ever faced. South Africa is one of the largest greenhouse gas (GHG) emitters in the world because 90% of our power is still derived from coal - the dirtiest of all fossil fuels. South Africa’s top polluter Eskom is responsible for nearly 40pc of the country’s GHG emissions. While contributing to the climate crisis, it has also corrupted our energy sector, drained our taxes, and plunged us into darkness.
