Drum accent tip
Music is basically a dance of opposites.
You can’t have loud without soft.
And there’s more……
Fast-slow
High-low
Bright-dark
Long-short
Sound-silence
Clean-sloppy
Having control over all the elements of music is what makes great musicians, and as drummers accents are one of the most important elements that we deal with.
So work on developing more contrast in your playing and…
Happy practicing!

Don’t cheat yourself out of a learning opportunity!
If you’re covering a song and can’t execute it 100% the way it happened on the record, dig in and learn a thing or two before you make it your own.
It’ll develop your skills and you very well find something new to add to your style!

Playing drums and keys at the same time
I once was in a band called I Once Was… as well
This is the oldest video on my phone. It’s survived multiple upgrades and I’m super happy I still have it. It’s nearly 9 years old now but it’s from a totally different time in my life and it captures the vibe of that era for me.
The power of music to bring you back to a place and time always blows my mind.
@sweatmusic is still out there rocking. Give them a listen and a follow if you like the heavy stuff!
Now I want go listen to all my old bands recordings… 😂

Don’t make this common drum accent mistake! - drumming tips #drumming #drum #drumlessons
Accents are one of the most important skills in a drummer’s toolbox. Without the 12 pitches that all other musicians get to use, more importance is placed on other elements of music for us drummers.
We can’t play chords or even melodies in the same fashion so we have to use accents to make the drum sing.
I’ve seen this 3 height phenomenon happen with tons of students.
Do you have difficulty with a certain accent pattern?
Let me know in the comments!
Rhythms & space - rhythm exercise #drumbeats #drum #drumming #drummer
I use this exercise with my students to develop their awareness of different spaces between notes.
This helps with identifying when their timing is uneven and in developing a solid swing feel.
It’s kind of like a table of time with only 2 notes per beat. The second not gradually shifts back by changing the subdivision.
Give it a try!

Drum rudiments - permutations are the rudiments of rhythm #drumming #drum #rudiments
Why do I teach permutations?
Permutations are the rudiments of rhythm. They are the building blocks of every rhythmic pattern you hear.
With my students, I run through all of these patterns to make sure that they can play each one in a smooth fashion.
There are hundreds of applications for these patterns and once you master them you’ll have zero issues with creativity ever again.
These patterns can be used:
✅ as a rhythm
✅ as accent patterns
✅ as double strokes
✅ as coordination exercises
✅ to develop creativity with FILLS
and much more…

Aha - Take on me - 3 cool grooves #drumbeats #drumming
All 3 of these grooves from Take On Me by Aha have an open hi hat on beat 3.
It’s a cool way of tying the whole song together with a rhythmic theme.
Getting hi hat opens and coordinating the left foot with all of your other limbs can be the biggest stumbling block many drummers have.
Need help getting coordinated?

Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 basic groove & variations #drumbeats #drumming
1979 starts out with a cool linear groove but then adds straight 8th notes while maintaining the original pattern as accents.
When I play it I add the 16th note pattern on the hats for the chorus to imitate the shaker.
Working out the coordination on these grooves while maintaining the consistency of the pattern throughout is the tough part! But when it’s finally down it’s a blast to play!

4 TOOL drum grooves - coordination builders! #drumbeats
Learning TOOL songs was absolutely one of the best formative decisions for my coordination skills. What began as a struggle, ultimately became some of the most enjoyable things for me to play.
And now I’ve watched this same scenario come to pass with almost every student I’ve ever had. When you’re learning a song and you run into a new challenge that seems totally insurmountable, you’re bound to get overwhelmed by it. You may even HATE it.
That’s when you need to take a step back and breathe. Try changing something about the way you’re working on it. Take it slower, just play small chunks, or in some cases, intentionally do it wrong. This seems counterintuitive, but then sometimes it’s the most beneficial practice method because when you master playing it incorrectly you’ll be able to more readily identify when you’re making mistakes.
I use this method a lot when students are inadvertently swinging a pattern that should be played straight. It may seem crazy but it works!
Who did you jam to when you started playing?
