How To Write Prose Like David Foster Wallace #shorts

It’s David Foster Wallace’s birthday and I was going to do a reading of This Is Water.

But then, I realised that I’d much rather talk about Wallace’s writing technique in the hope that we as writers can learn something from it.

David Foster Wallace’s writing has been described as immaculate and I think the reason he could achieve such writing was the fact that he wrote in longhand.

Yes, my fellow blue light junkies, he wrote using pen and paper.

At least the first two or three drafts.

You see, he figured out that what he needed to do as a writer was not type out the words as fast as possible but rather, to slow down and pay attention to the words and the feelings that they evoked inside him

That kind of centering and stillness is why David Foster Wallace was able to reflect his views of reality without complicating his storylines.

It also helped him truly connect with the idea that he wanted to convey and write in new and unique ways, such as his most famous essay This Is Water.
