Canada is poised to force digital giants – like Facebook and Google – to share profits with Canadian media outlets when they make money off their content.
Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez introduced Bill C-18, also known as the Online News Act, on Tuesday, which is the Liberal government’s latest attempt to support Canada’s struggling news industry.
According to Rodriguez, 450 private news outlets have shut their doors in the last year as Google and Facebook hoover up 80 per cent of online ad revenues.
