Sunday Longplay - Rad Racer 2 (NES)

This week on Sunday Longplay, I'm playing a sequel that I had never played before despite having played the first game to death. Welcome to Rad Racer 2 on the Nintendo Entertainment System!

This game follows the same basic formula as the first game, where players race through 8 different tracks getting from Point A to Point B against a time limit, with checkpoints that add additional time to your clock. Get to the finish line before your timer hits zero to win! This game has a few changes from the first game, though. First, you only get one choice of car to play with as opposed to the choice of two in the first game. Second, there are only two choices of music in this game as opposed to three in the first game. Third, the skidding sound effects don't pack as much of a punch as in the first game.

These changes kind of drag the game down a few pegs compared to its predecessor, but there are other positive changes as well. First being the new rocket boost mechanic at the starting line, which you can also use to recover from a crash (though you have to be careful using it in that case so you don't crash into another car right when the boost hits!). Second, the crash animation in this game doesn't take nearly as long as in the first game so you can get back on the road faster. Third, speedrunners will love this: the game shows your time for each section of the race on the left side of the dashboard so speedrunners can submit their times for each track more easily.

Overall, I will say the first game is better, but this one is still worth checking out!
