Imagine your life balanced in the middle of a teeter-totter where you lean to the right for heaven but lean to the left for hell. Jesus talked about this seesaw when he made one of the most profound declarations ever made by anyone in history: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy, but I came that you would have life and have it abundantly.”

First and foremost, this is a bold proclamation by Jesus of his divinity. In other words, Jesus did not see himself as a “good guy” a “wise sage” or a “prophet” but as the Son of God who alone offers true abundance. Considering that He willingly died over being the Son of God can only mean one of two things:

He truly was the Son of God who died to forgive our sins
He was a fool who died a gruesome and tortuous death for nothing
Unfortunately, there is no room for any “in-between” verdict. Saying Jesus was a “good guy” or comparing him to historical figures such as Gandhi or Muhammad are cop-outs that avoid the question of why he died as he did. So our primary question must be: Who do you say Jesus is?

The progression of Jesus’ statement also makes it clear that destroying someone is far worse than killing them. And Satan wants to destroy us by stealing love, peace and God from us. Satan wants you and I to live a “little hell” of broken relationships, purposelessness and fear before pulling us away from God so he can eternally and utterly destroy us .

Fortunately, we get to choose which way that seesaw is going to swing.

It’s like God is gently calling us to lean his way, “If you give your life to my Son, my Son will give you his life of abundance.” Jesus will live inside you and you will be set free!!
