Soucouyant (Haiti)

A soucouyant in its original form is a ball of fire and belongs to a class of spirits called jumbies. The creature is usually an old woman that sheds her skin and hides it in a mortar until she returns.

Once out of her skin, she becomes a ball of fire that flies through the air looking for sleeping victims.

Douen (Trinidad)

The Douen is the spirit of a child who died before it was baptized. They have the stature of a child and you can easily recognize them because their feet and knees face backwards, so when they leave footprints, it looked like they were walking in the opposite direction.

Lougarou (Haiti/New Orleans)

The word 'loup-garou,' means 'wolf man,' and the lore is similar to most werewolf legends, but in Haitian folklore, they’re said to be either powerful shape-shifting sorcerers wearing magical animal skins, or they were turned into one by a Vodou sorcerer.

Lougarou are equivalent to the Rougarou in Louisiana. They usually eat children, but they’ll eat adults too. A person has usually done something bad in order to be turned into a lougarou, similar to zombies and the lougarou is usually someone the victim knows.

They can transform their bodies into a wide range of animals like wolves, dogs, cats, birds, lizards, snakes, spiders, chickens or even trees.

La Sirene (many Caribbean countries)

LaSirene is the queen of the ocean and the water spirits and she’s one of the most important Lwa in Haitian Vodou. In Haiti there are two powerful loa or spirits of the sea, La Sirene and her partner Agwé.

LaSirene is sometimes referred to as Mambo (Mombo) LaSirene.

She owns all the riches in the ocean like sunken treasure, coral or pearls and she controls the oceans and tides. She also has the ability to hypnotize people with her beauty.

Common gifts or offerings given to her are mirrors, combs, jewelry, flowers, wine, doves and perfume. In exchange for gifts, she helps her followers gain prosperity, health, good luck or love.
