The concept of Transfer. What does it mean to us in the martial arts?

The concept of transfer in training, where we focus on how well the activities we do transfer to improved performance, is fundamental. How do the various flexibility, strength, speed and endurance exercises, drills and training we do transfer optimally to our actual performance outcome?

There is another useful way to think of the concept of transfer in training and that is how key principles of movement transfer from one fighting range to another, or even when training in a different martial art. Today, we're looking at some great examples of this concept of fundamental skill transfer. Mitch Kochonda, my training partner, one of the world's leading athletic development coaches, explains the concept of transfer in terms of athletic development. I'll then look at some technical ideas of transfer.
