Breaking Barriers Between Realms

Is there an actual barrier between the Living and the other Realms? If we all are of the same substance then why is it that there seems to be limitations in one realm as oppose to another realm? Do we somehow change in a fundamental way that makes us different from what we actually are? Science says there is no such thing as life after death because it has not been proven that consciousness can exists without a living brain? Yet there is strong evidence outside a lab that something takes place at that moment of no brain activity, so what is it?
