Should you buy the SIG 556? It depends what you are looking for. It's based on the Swiss 550 series of guns and it's the predecessor to the MCX. It takes the best of the AK and the AR and smashes the two together.

When this gun came out it was the first time a rifle like this was available to the American consumer market during the past 20 years. This rifle came about for a couple of reasons due to a 1989 executive order that specifically named certain rifles and banned their importation it was impossible to get your hands on the 550. So guns like that became legendary among military gun aficionados. Then in 2007 SIG that was now the United States arm of the German and Swiss factories announced the SIG 556. Which is a gun based entirely on the 550 semi-automatic rifles that people could not get their hands on for 20 years. It was announced this gun would take AR15 magazines but would possess the look and the operating system of the original 550 which is the operating system that has shown its soldier proof in the grittiest of conditions. The Kalashnikov long-stroke gas piston.
