Most modern managers use their position to get you to listen to them. It doesn't work. They resort to positional authority - "you do what I tell you because I'm the boss!" - because they do not have real authority.

Real authority is something that people who climb the ladder at work by kissing ass & playing company politics do not have. They must resort to the lowest form of authority; is pointing to their nameplate on the office door, when telling you what to do.

These bosses are often ignored by their employees who crap on their ideas, send text messages during work meetings. Employees will be insubordinate and unsupportive of the boss; to the detriment of the organization.

To gain real authority one must have accomplishments under their belt, and accomplishment is what is missing from many managers in this day and age.

Employees respond to real authority. Real authority, just like respect, must be earned. Here is how you go about earning that authority.
