Performance Notes:

The seventh movement of J.S. Bach's Cantata No. 146, "My Spirit Be Joyful" is originally scored for tenor and bass soloists with two oboists, strings, and continuo. The text is simple, and the melodicism is melismatic. The structure is A-B-A; the vivacious F-major A section is followed idiomatically by a still-energetic B section in minor, and then returns to the A section for a full restatement.
This setting retains all the original instrumentation using brass instruments and a keyboard. Apart from cadential notes, which may even be played a bit long, all notes should be poco staccato e molto leggiero -including those which are not specifically marked staccato. Attention to tempo and precise rhythm are crucial, and that should drive the phrasing, and while there are myriad short motives, the all the players should focus on connecting them all into larger ideas.
