Great shipwreck of the cargo ship Voici Bernadette

The 180-foot-long freighter known as the Voici Bernadette was towed out to sea and sunk in 30 meters of water about 11 miles southeast of Fort Pierce Inlet.

Technicians placed 200 tons of concrete in the cargo holds and used cutting torches to cut six large holes in the ship's hull. Seawater was pumped on board, which took about an hour to fill.

At 11:46 am, the Voici Bernadette slid below the surface. The freighter was donated by US Customs and Border Patrol after it was apprehended for smuggling cocaine from Haiti to Miami.

Crews and volunteers removed anything from the freighter that could have caused environmental damage.
