On January 27, 1959, a 10-member group consisting mostly of students from the Ural Polytechnic Institute, led by 23-year-old Igor Dyatlov set off on a 14-day expedition. When the group of expert skiers didn't show up around their expected return date, a search team was dispatched.

When their bodies were found, their strange and gruesome injuries left investigators baffled and repulsed. Some were missing eyes, another was missing her tongue, eyebrows, and many had been struck by a force comparable to that of a car accident. Possible culprits included a suspected Yeti attack, an avalanche, and even Russian military involvement.
