Sgt. Shannon Smith, a cannon crewmember assigned to 3rd Battalion, 29th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Infantry Division on Fort Carson, Colorado, describes why she enlisted and what being in the Army means to her, March 10, 2022, at Fort Carson, Colorado. When Smith arrived at 3rd Bn., 29 FA Reg, she and a few others were the very first females in their battery. “We had to break through the stigmas and barriers,” she said. “I spent every day trying to disprove that females couldn’t do as good as males in our job.
