Overall, you want to fight him on the stairs. It makes it easier to re-engage him after roll dodging or if you are at a distance. It also makes it a bit more difficult for him to hit you.

Dangerous to initiate attack bc he has counters that can one shot you (depending on build) or kill you quickly. Off the bat you can, but have to be more selective. Best strat to avoid the spinnnng attack is to position yourself below him on the stairs.
