Fell asleep
Woke up
As one among 81 serenity souls
Captured
In the inevitable mystique of sound
Wearing scars on our backs
From bearing so many blessings
Took council from healers
Then spoke as if we'd walked the entire universe
In a stare
A blink
A whisper
Or passing phase
Spent time handing out lifelines in sentences
Creating progressive lifetimes in days
Whilst mastering how to shape shift in and out of words
Words that made mankind want to make more of his mind
Words that made many want to make more money
Words that made many motivated to move more mountains
Words that made men more weary
Words that made women
Want for more
Because we knew
It was the only way we would survive
The only way
We would survive
Like we survived slavery
Survived slave ships
Survived chains
Survived whips
Survived lynching
Survived burning
Survived punching
Survived kicks
Survived rape
Survived castration
Survived fields where our blood ran
As cotton was picked
Had to survive
Still have to survive
Survive the struggle of the divide into poor and rich
Survive the reverse of god to dog and goddess to bitch
Survive aids
Survive guns
Survive alcohol
Survive drugs
Survive prison and wrongful arrest
Survive hate
Survive anguish
Survive pain
Coming together
Living forever
Surviving death
Because we have to survive
We must survive
We've got to survive
We will
Survive
