The Red Movement: Social and Environmental Justice in the 21st Century

Shadan Kapri (pronounced Shadawn Capri) is an Attorney, Activist, and Author in the U.S. who has dedicated her life to learning more about human rights and environmental justice through awareness, advocacy, and actions. She was a U.S. Fulbright Scholar on Human Rights and Human Trafficking prior to becoming an international human rights attorney.

We are in the midst of human rights and environmental crises. The death of George Floyd and the civil unrest that followed revealed the systemic nature of racism in America. The Black Lives Matter Movement is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to understanding, confronting, and dismantling racism, discrimination, and modern-day injustices in America and internationally.

While the world declares itself 'slave-free,' the truth is just the opposite. Modern-day slavery, also known as human trafficking, is more widespread and lucrative now than during the transatlantic slave trade by bringing in more than 30 billion dollars a year. And it impacts people from all nationalities and races.

People are still bought and sold in public auctions, forced to sell their bodies, or work in hidden factories under unbearable conditions. Some even toil away on farms and construction sites on some of the world's most famous sporting events. Currently, forced labor, slave labor, or child labor can be linked back to various industries from toys to clothes, food to diamonds. It is even used in mining and too often those basic raw materials find their way into electronics, computers, smartphones, cars cosmetics, and even jewelry. These realities have led to the start of The Red Movement, a global-focused movement to end all forms of modern-day slavery.

The George Floyd tragedy and the Black Lives Matter Movement opened people's eyes to the widespread nature of social injustice. The Red Movement pushes the door wide open by ushering in a new era of human rights awareness and reform linked to saving the environment for generations to come.
