Does the LDS Church Shun Members Who Leave, Elders Holland & Christofferson Give Answers

In a 2012 BBC interview, Elder Holland said the LDS Church does not shun members who leave it. He said, "if I had a son or a daughter who left the church or was alienated or had a problem, I can tell you I would not cut that child out of family life." Two years later in a young adult devotional in 2014, Elder Christofferson gave a different message. He said when a family member's beliefs or choices make it impossible to support both the Savior and family member ... our support or tolerance at times is suspended, for the sake of our higher love to the Savior.Show more

This is just another way of saying to shun these family members. Christofferson has laid out a theological argument that any Mormon family could use to shun others. So, when they're talking in a public interview, they can say that we don't cut off family members that have left the church, but when they're talking to the members in a devotional, they teach how the love of Christ is needed to support cutting these people out of our lives.
