I participated in the "30 Seconds of Shred" Guitar contest when I was at Louder than Life in Kentucky. My ego tells me that I'm the best and should obviously win, but Louder than Life is a heavy-metal focused festival, and the shredders who made it to the finals were much more metal-influenced and less melodic than me. They played way more notes in their thirty seconds. I was able to play more in that style when I was a teenager, but I've been interested in playing in a sparser and more blues-influenced style for a long time now. Ultimately, music is not a contest. It would've been cool to win, but I don't need to win. It's actually okay for me to not win. A fifteen-year-old who played a million notes in his thirty seconds won. Winning meant a lot more to him than it would've meant to me.
