Germany set out to replace the G36. The H&K 416, 433 and Haenel MK556 (aka BT15 / CR223) slugged it out in military trials. The Haenel MK556 won, but then things got a bit messy. The story behind the Haenel MK556 / CR223 and it now being imported by B&T USA as the BT15.
