In the two hundred years leading up to the fall of the Western Roman empire, the spread of Christianity was just as fatal to the empire as the invading Germanic tribes. While the barbarians might have attacked from without, Christianity was more subtle but systematically drawing the Romans from their ancient gods of the Capitoline hill.

In some odd twist of fates the US Capitol building houses the same gods worshiped by the Romans - Minerva, Venus and George Washington in the place of Jupiter as the father of the republic. These ancients gods of the Roman republic, although in charge of federal government, are met with the familiar challenge - Christianity. Americans widely associate themselves with the varied denominations of Christendom. The disparity between Greco-Roman ideals and the Christian faith has often brought with it its own problems in the exercise of civic duty and in democratic processes.

How this ancient spiritual rivalry plays itself out in the political division evident in America today is what I explore in this episode.
