Since January 1999 there has been extensive religious conflict in the East Indonesian province of Maluku.

Approximately 8.000 people have been killed and 500.000 forced from their homes and land.

It appears to be an internal conflict between Christian and Muslim, but the underlying reasons are part of a concerted push to see Indonesia's principle of religious tolerance replaced by an aggressive Islamic fundamentalism.

The Islands of Maluku have been the hardest hit. . .
