Ballard Starbucks closes as nearby businesses deal with safety concerns

As complaints about crime and safety issues stack up in Ballard, a prominent Starbucks location has suddenly closed in the heart of the neighborhood.

A Starbucks spokesperson told KOMO News the company wants to update the location to make it more welcoming. People in the neighborhood said workers at the Starbucks at 2200 NW Market Street felt threatened and demanded better security.

Ballard Health Club is just below the coffee shop and Pat Gilbrough the gym owner has been hearing about the problems.

“We understand there was a plainclothes security man in there,” Gilbrough said. “The reason the guy was in there was because of threats to the staff."
