A Master's salute and a 28 shot (couldn't toll a bell) salute to the 28 men who were lost 55 years ago today, when the SS Daniel J. Morrell broke in two and sank on Lake Huron, as well as shot in honor of the lone survivor, watchman Dennis Hale, who passed away in 2015.

Built in 1906, the Morrell hauled Iron Ore on the great lakes. At 603 feet, the Morrell was one of the largest freighters on the lake until the 1920s. Like many steel ships of her time, the Morrell was built from a high sulfer steel, which would become extremely brittle in cold temperatures. On her final voyage, the Morrell was en route to Taconite Harbor, MI, when according to survivor Hale, the ship began to make loud banging sounds, and soon, "Tore in half slowly, like a piece of paper". Hale, along with three other crewmen, made it to the life raft, when a large object began looming over them. At first they feared it was another ship, about to crush them, but they soon realized that it was the Morrell's stern, still under power with several crewmen inside. The stern continued another 5 miles before sinking.

For 40 hours, Dennis Hale fought for his life, wearing nothing but his pea coat, life jacket and boxer shorts. The other three would freeze to death. Hale was rescued on the evening of November 30th. For years, Hale refused to discuss the ordeal, until he decided to write a book, telling his story, some 15-20 years later.

Prior to the Morrell, in 1958, the 639 foot Carl D. Bradley would sink, with 33 of the 35 men losing their lives, in similar fashion to the Morrell. For 9 years, the Daniel J. Morrell was the last major shipwreck on the Lakes, until November 10th, 1975, when the 729 Foot Edmund Fitzgerald was lost, taking her entire crew to the bottom of Lake Superior.
