NOTE: @12:23 After the end credits there is an interview with K. Sompong himself in Thai with English subtitles. The source of the interview is in the video description under "references."
Khun Sompong Phornpon is a rubber farmer from southern Thailand. He started his life with virtually nothing, but by following Thai Sufficiency Economics - a system of simple methods to build sustainable wealth - he managed to put his children through university, improve his farm, and organize his community into a powerful farmer’s union.
The prosperity that followed was used to build additional resources for the community including a rubber processing facility, a knowledge center, and provide scholarships for young people.
This story, the first in a series detailing local solutions to global problems, illustrates how simple organizational skills and building sustainable wealth can lower a community’s dependence on politicians and fluctuating markets, and empower them to forge their own lives on their own terms.
This story is also a powerful demonstration of Thailand’s Sufficiency Economics in practice.
